We are seeing Bears on our cameras in south Arkansas, one is near a 12 yr old kid's bow stand.

Would you let your kid walk to the stand and back in the dark with no gun and a bear in the area ?

I'm assuming these are black bears, they are new to our lease.

You can't tell if they're black bears from the pics? What other types of bears would there be in S AR?

I wouldn't think it's polar or grizzly bears in south Arkansas.

Black bears are very docile

I'd be more worried about making sure he knows that he absolutely can not shoot one

I see many bears where we hunt in Madison Parish. Bears have not been a problem although one reared up on my SIL's ladder stand, scaring hell out of her.
Most I have encountered are very shy and quick to run away.
The real danger is getting mixed up with a sow and cubs. Sows are VERY defensive of cubs and may actually charge, esp if you are between her and the cubs.
I don't fear them, but I can tell you this: You want to feel the hair stand straight up on your scalp? Walk up on a bear, in the dark by the feeder at your stand. And you have a flash light and an "unloaded" bow. That encounter resulted in the purchase of pepper spray that I have never had to use. Good luck.

I say No. It is better to be overly cautious when it is your young son. If you do decide to let him walk alone he should at least have a handgun on him even if it is just a 9mm with some hardcast bullets.

I always hunted within shouting distance to my ol man until I was old enough to drive a vehicle down the camp road (14 or so). He usually dropped me off within eyesight of the stand or I hunted the next stand past him. When we hunt together we still pretty much do the same thing just a little more cautious about the wind direction now though.

Bears were never a problem but we did have hogs. Give him a bright arse flashlight and a whistle, then hunt relatively close.
