The Decline of Tiger Stadium Will Be Alleva's Biggest Failure (& Legacy)

The tradition of TS was always night games and crowd noise. That's how it got its reputation. It was intimidating to lesser opponents and disruptive to the stout of heart. Now, it's become mostly a hub for tailgating. Note, I didn't say only. On occasion, it can still rise to the occasion. But those are now the exception.

There are things Joe has little say on - TV contracts, traffic infrastructure (not much different than it was 45 yrs ago), TV timeouts, etc. I don't fault him for those.

But Joe never speaks of the winning combo (nights and noise). He, apparently, sanctions the increase in piped-in music (which only moves TS toward a generic norm). Rarely, do we play a marquee OOC opponent in TS.

I love LSU, love TS (lived in it from '83-'85), and it gives me the sads to what is happening and I can't see Joe even recognizing the concern.

When the wins come back the stadium will too. It had become stagnant under the former coach.

Idk I think closing in the endzone on one side was more of an improvement than a decline but maybe that's just me

Alleva rightly gets a lot of shite. But how's this his fault? When we have night games, fans can only be bothered stay past half time if were in a close game against a highly ranked team.

The attitude of the fans ruined Tiger Stadium. It's only electric once or maybe twice a year.

Need more wins and excitement around the program.

And I'd argue Joe hurt tailgating more than helped which has made the atmosphere worse. Expensive parking, removing tailgating down Nicholson, etc.

I hate Joe Alleva but what do you expect him to do? Chain the exits on the west side shut to keep 60% of the student section and frat boys from leaving?

Piped in music, like you said, is becoming the norm. But seriously what does that have to do with fans being loud unless they are just sitting there bitching about "Mobbin'" playing on 3rd down.

Most P5 won't play a home and home any more. Email Verge Ausberry...he'd give you insight on who they've reached out to. Think Oklahoma, Michigan, tOSU.

Plus how can people be loud and read their FB feed, update Instagram with a TS selfie or Snapchat somebody?

The interior of ye stadium needs a massive renovation. Ask anyone that visited Lambeau this year and they will tell you the interior of the place made the nostalgia second to none.

The restrooms in Tiger Stadium are shite. The lines for the concessions are shite. The absence of modern televisions in the concourses are shite. You spent hundreds of millions putting lipstick on a pig with the recent exterior renovations. It is time the interior got the same love.

If you renovate it, they will stay.

Alleva has gotten us every night game he can possibly get and he just approved a multi-million dollar renovation of the interior of Tiger Stadium over the next two years.

the dorms in Tiger Stadium, one of a kind. Were we the only stadium that had dorms? The bathrooms, TV's and concessions are a joke. Take out the piped in music and bring back some old cheers like hot boudin...

I think it was kind of a deal with the devil that was in a way necessary.

Seems like back in the day the stadium was peopled with thousands of oil field roughnecks, plant shift workers, plumbers and even some Ozzy and Harriet working class white collar types. They didn't tend to tailgate all day but drive in from everywhere from Houma to Slidell to Lafayette, etc., stopping at one of convenience stores to get a half pint or a pint of whiskey to slip into their sock or even their back pocket. Students likely could sneak in booze too with not much problems.

To afford competitive facilities and construction, they almost had to go to a more corporate based system with suites, club levels, companies buying tickets in bulk and passing them out to customers, etc. and bigger money boosters. Tailgating flourished as companies and individuals made a day long party of cooking and drinking. Makes them less likely to stay full games and to risk embarrassment being flagged in a pat down. Some just sell their tickets or even give them away. Students too risk a several hundred dollar MIP charge trying to get in to the games with booze and I think even in some cases being singled out with in in tailgating areas.

Can't really said they shouldn't have done it. They needed to keep up with the Joneses. But it makes for a different atmosphere.

Of course I could be wrong about all of this.

We're similar in age. Difference is, we were hungry back then Today's group expects it. We grew up hearing about the 59 championship and legends of LSU, romanticized it all in our heads, playing it over and over again, and we yearned for that experience, or at least I did. Where yesterday's group wanted to rock the place and do whatever they could to help the team, today's group is not so aggressive or hungry. They kind of expect it, and while I can appreciate the expectation level going up, with it and TV every game comes a little more tamer tiger fan and one that expects it to happen, because for many, they didn't experience the desire to attain it, or they quickly forgot what it was like to be constantly looked over.

Joe doesn't force 1/4 of the grown arse men to be staring at their phone all game. Or for the crowd to leave.

Put the damn phone down for three hours and actually cheer. You can live without it

What exactly do you want him to do? Other than influencing the music, what exactly do you think Joe can do to improve TS right now? Aren't the opponents selected years in advance? Doesn't the SEC dictate home/away games? Doesn't TV coverage pretty much set the start time for the games? And doesn't the OOC rent-a-win team have to agree to come here? I agree TS has lost some of its luster, but what makes you point to JA as the problem?

Or are you just trying to rag on him for the sake of ragging on him?

You are correct sir.

We were crap during the late 70s and early 80s. And it was loud and intimidating.

People who have only been around TS since 2000 think it's about coaches and winning. And that is part of the reason the mystique is gone.
