Yeah but we will never know how good he could've been. I'm not trying to be a dick but don't get caught up in the emotion of the moment. He was "on pace" to have a great career but he didn't have a long great career like Clemens and others

Its not like he got incucted in the hall of fame tonight

His team decided to retire his number, why anyone would have an issue with that is beyond me

Jeffrey Loria should get some credit here. Long regarded as the worst owner in baseball, he has shown little regard for the fans of his team, but they have handled this whole ordeal very well. The gesture of retiring Fernandez's number, to the players wearing his jersey tonight all have been classy moves. One of the posters intimated that Loria said Fernandez's girlfriend/child/grandmother will be taken care of. Whatever that looks like whether its paying out the remainder of his contract or whatever, if followed through on is a very good thing.

Man that was tough watching those guys crying during the pre-game.

I was driving on I-95 this afternoon and they had a billboard up, "thanks for the memories we will miss you Jose." Damn that was rough to see too. They had one of the local West Palm news reporters at the game showing some guy buying a JF jersey for some random kid. Jose touched so many lives. Terrible tragedy

Buster Olney said on ESPN a bit ago that he thinks Fernandez is going to win the NL Cy Young.

I hope they got Dee that ball back. What an unreal moment. Maybe one of the best moments in all of sports. I don't know the last time I cried but I definitely shed a tear watching the tribute.

Aledmys Diaz just hit a grand slam in the Cards game, some emotion at home. Crazy stuff.

First career slam.

Didn't play yesterday was in Miami with family and friends.

Back from Miami, back from Jose Fernandez's memorial, Aledmys Diaz says he's playing for his friend -- and hits a grand slam. #Cardinals

He will win the Cy Young this year.

Maybe, but it wont based on this years performance. He had a good season. Not the best though.

Aledmys Diaz, front row center, red hat. (His father is in the back in the Yankees shirt.)

Jose Fernandez, front row right, yellow hat, noshing on something.

There is no clear cut favorite, but he has as good a case as anyone.

Just because he died, you don't retire his number.

He didn't win a Cy Young, World Series, mvp. He's not a hall of famer. Just because he was killed in an accident doesn't mean he deserves his jersey retired
The Marlins disagree, obviously.

I think you're also downplaying what he meant to the city of Miami, and the Cubans specifically.

And at this point, with essentially a split race between Fernandez and a bunch of other pitchers (Scherzer, Hendricks, Lester, Bumgarner, Kershaw, etc.) there is absolutely every reason to think and understand that most of the baseball writers will vote for Fernandez. Not sure why people can't accept that he had an amazing season/career up to this point and that he deserves this posthumous Cy Young Award.

He was going to be in the Hall of Fame if he pitched at least another 7-8 years. He was honestly the best pitcher, night in and night out in the game over the past three years IMO. Injuries slowed him down obviously. And yes, I'm saying I would take him over Kershaw, Arrieta or whomever else anyone else wants to mention.

Career ranks:
Lowest homefield ERA since 1913 (40+ starts): Ranks 1st, 1.49 ERA
Highest K percentage (50+ starts): Ranks 1st, 31.2 percent
Highest K/BB percentage (450 innings): 1st, 23.8 percent
xFIP (450+ innings): 1st, 70
