Best SUV/Small SUV?

Moving back to the US after several years away, and I have no idea what's available there these days.
I'm looking for something used (2013-2016) in the $25k-$40k price range for my wife.
2 rows with storage is fine, but I'll also look at stuff with a third row (preferably collapsible).
Any recommendations?

Subaru Forester, Consumer Reports top-rated small SUV for the past ten years. Consider buying new. The model commands such a high resale value that the difference between new and used is minuscule.

Toyota 4Runner.
OP said small SUV, so I figure more like a RAV4.
RAV4 is a great vehicle, and you can get it fully loaded for around $30k.

You might also consider the Ford Escape. I'm on my second one.

RAV4 is a crossover. 4Runner is an SUV. Don't think they make three row "small" crossovers or SUVs but I could be wrong.

My wife has a Santa Fe that does well on the flatlands of LA. I like it as well.

I see a lot of soccer moms driving Honda Pilot's.
I've never been in one so I can't really say but they seem to be very popular.

The new ones are very good vehicles. Honda went a little minivanish with the styling, but it's otherwise a very good crossover. The EX-L model has a lot of features for the money and avoids the annoying start/stop feature in the Touring trim models.

Also got great ratings in the latest issue of motor trend that I was browsing the other day. For the value a new Subaru Forester is incredible.
On a related note my girlfriend drives a crosstek and it's also a very good vehicle for the value.
My next vehicle will probably be a new Forester. I refuse to spend 40K plus on a new vehicle. Seems absurd.

2016 Honda pilot is a damn fine vehicle for the price. The new modes are bigger than the old and has much more room on the 3rd row.
Just got my wife one and I'm driving the old 2006 one with 120k miles. Loved this one too.

Toyota Highlander
Mazda CX-5
Subaru Crossover/Forrester
All these douches rattling off Audi etc. are attention whoring. Unless you aren't trying to impress anyone with an emblem on the car, these are solid choices.

My wife likes her Chevy Equinox. Rides really nice and gets around 32 mpg.
We looked at others, especially the Outback, but my wife likes the look of the Equinox. The Outback we test drove rode and drove super nice.
