I know i will get flamed for this but i can't really blame herbie either. he was practically forced to run that report by his producers. they are the ones who should issue an apology. the only on tv. personalities that owe les an apology are skip bayliss and mitch albom. their character assassinations were classless and unprofessional.

I can't believe anyone would defend Herbstreit.
I'm not talking about his initial SCOOP on GameDay.
I'm talking about his horrendous, disgustingly self-serving follow up defense of himself. Saying LSU and Skip "reacted quickly" midday on Saturday? That's insane. No, actually it is C.Y.A.
Then the ESPN spin machine went in full motion with every talking head defending Herbie and calling Les everything but an Al Qaeda operative.
You people standing up for Herbie are clueless.

No, He is right on. I am not so sure that a sportscaster should be held to the same journalistic integrity as a news reporter.
After all an incorrect sports report does/should not equate to a loss of sleep. If in fact it does, priorities may be out of whack.
A simple correction is all that is needed.
Those that called Miles a liar, well, they are no different from the girls on the View, just trying to keep viewers tuned in, just opinions, nothing more.
Wrong. I usually defend the media, but in this case...well Kirk violated one of the CARDINAL RULES of journalism...and sports reporters ARE journalists, and must be held to the same standards as the hard news guys...which is VERIFIY YOUR INFORMATION BEFORE you run with it.
Did the producer pressure him into going with the story...perhaps, but that is no excuse. Should he be fired? NO. Should he AND THE PRODUCER apologize...well that would be the classy thing to do. Same for commentators who attacked Miles wrongly.

Journalists are journalists, regardless of the content of the copy. Herbie wanted a scoop, just like CBS and Dan Rather wanted to scoop the Bush National Guard story. Both used sh*tty sources that got by their producers.
Dan and his producer were bounced.
Dan and his producer were bounced.

Terry Foster of the Detroit News reported in his blog that Herbstreit was "duped." He did not go into details regarding who did the "duping" or for what reason. I also remember someone on this thread saying that Herbstreit was duped by a Desmond Howard impersonator. Regardless, I think Herbie certainly learned a lesson and will not be attempting to break stories anymore. And, yes, he certainly owes Les and the LSU kids an apology.

He was going by a source he felt confident in and just stated what he believed to be true!!!
And I have posted the email I received from Fiutak at CFN who told me the "source" was someone on the team. I emailed him back and asked him to "out" the person if "this was such breaking news". He said he could not. I dont know if this is a misleading statement as they are all trying to cover up their backsides. But who knows.

It is one thing to claim you have a source on a message board that maybe 1500 people will see. It is completely different for a member of the main stream media to do the same exact thing. Here are the reasons why:
1. Herbie gets paid for the info he provides
2. Jounralism depends on credibility (internet posting does not)
3. On the internet no one knows who you are and cant really call you out on your bullshite

I'll quit my job if he he makes a valid and unslanted apology
Your job is safe.
Valid? haha haha haaahhhhaa. Unslanted? Certainly not, the real entertainment value would be in listening to the spin.
The quick bottom line is that these sports talkers are just that, talkers. Talking heads, maybe call them analysts. What they arent is journalists. Sometimes they want us to think they are journalists, but they arent.
I am not a big fan of Les Miles, couldnt have blamed him if he went home to Michigan and I wouldnt have been sorry or worried if he went. But I do think the man has character, good character. His ability to lead the team after Katrina is truly remarkable. And to those talking heads that virtually called him a slimy liar...shame, true shame on all you pious bast%_)@!

It will be interesting to see if the apology contains the word "if". I've always maintained that apologies that contain this word (ex: I'm sorry if what I said offended you) are not apologies at all, but merely an attempt to sidestep blame.
Bring it, Herbie.
Bring it, Herbie.

Any chance the rest of the talking heads at ESPN will apologize for saying Herbie was reporting facts, but LSU magically stepped up to the plate?
There were no facts in what Herbie said. Even if you believe Miles had an offer from Michigan, and a guy on a sail boat say that didn't happen, the proof that it was complete BS is the Tenuta as DC he attached with it. Tenuta knew nothing about it and neither did Herbie.
The "journalist" at ESPN never break stories so they never have to find a second source. They hear them elsewhere and all the sudden "Len Pascareli has learned..." Yeah they learn it by listening to real journalist. They just report it as thier own.
The Saban to WVU has every bit as much truth as Herbie's Miles to Michigan, Tenuta goes with him as DC.

I wrote to Terry Foster of the Detroit News. To avoid restating what was written, here is my post on that:

That's right. It was you, belowpar. I just wrote about the Desmond Howard story on Terry Foster's blog. I referenced your post but without your name. Sorry, I couldn't remember or find it.

thats fine...could care less...I don't know if its true, I've tried to verify it, but I got it from someone who should be reliable.

His source was a prank phone call. He made no attempt to confirm the report. He went with it on national tv right before the championship game. That's gross negligence.

Well said. I agree whole-heartedly. I have been reading all of these message boards. Herbstreit is not alone. There are many tiger fans who've said worse about their coach. Shame on them.

Can someone post the link to the actual apology. Or hasn't it happened yet? Can't find it.
Posted on 12/18/07 at 3:02 pm to DetroitCity
no such thing. The original poster is often subject to tourette's like rantings with no basis in fact. He is depriving a village somewhere of an idiot.
