For South Louisiana driving. Runs about an extra 2k as an option. Very slight hit to MPG.

Depends on the vehicle and it's intended use.

not really.
unless its an suv that will be pulling boats out of slick launches.

AWD systems are ideal for wet, icy and roads with loose surface material. Some of them are off-road capable, but a lot of that depends on the underpinnings of suspension, ground clearance, skid plates, etc.
So, if you are driving on wet, slippery or icy roads on a regular basis, you will notice improved capabilities with AWD, IMHO.

I don't think it's particularly worth it down here. Assuming that the base option is front wheel drive, that can get you out of most of the trouble you get into on our flat roads.

I have 4 wheel drive and the mountain/snow steering package, but I live where I have to drive mountains to get to civilization.
I guess if you live on a farm you could need it.
I can't see the value for someone who drives on paved roads or shell roads.

AWD is for women.
Get a GX460, Land Crusier, or LX570 - FULL TIME 4x4

Depends. They're much faster at takeoff and great for rain/snow driving, but I'm not sure you'd necessarily need it where you're located.

I believe AWD vehicles retain higher resale value, so there's that.

I would say that unless you drive in areas where icy roads are a problem (or at least a possibility), that AWD is a bad idea. Higher up front cost, worse gas mileage, and higher repair costs make it a bad idea if it is not going to provide much benefit.

The AWD on my R8 is worth it, IMO

Naw, for New England area where they average as much snow fall as we do rain per year.....absolutely. Wouldn't go without it. You don't need AWD here.

Had both 2WD and AWD vehicles, when I lived in BR. Could not tell the difference between the two. I would not pay $2K for it.

I love the way my AWD Acura suv grips the road during a storm, but it's not worth the wasted gas.

How are you planning to use the vehicle?
