So I just spent an hour on the phone with FEMA. Basically, if you have a high credit score, you will qualify for an SBA Loan, which means you are inelegible to receive a grant from FEMA.

The only way to receive a FEMA grant is not to qualify for a loan.

Additional Disaster Assistance Program Information:

"Money is awarded for necessary assistance and serious needs caused by the disaster. This includes medical, dental, child care, funeral, personal property, transportation, and moving and storage that are authorized by law. To qualify for this assistance, you must have needs caused by the disaster not covered by insurance. For personal property, transportation, and moving and storage, an applicant must be declined a disaster loan from the SBA."

That makes me want to vomit.

Can you elaborate a bit? This seems extreme on FEMA's part and, if this is a rule that they always follow, then, most of the folks involved in this flooding catastrophe should have this info.

If you have time:

Can you give us more details on your call, what questions did you ask and what was their exact answer?

Thanks.

FEMA - Frequently asked questions

quote:

Q: Do I have to be low-income to qualify for disaster aid? I think I make too much money.

A: No. Federal and state disaster assistance programs are available to all who suffered damages. Aid is damage-based, not income-based. The kinds of help provided depend on an applicant’s circumstances and unmet needs.

Let me get this straight. You are upset because the government wants to loan you money at below market rate instead of just giving you cash? Because that is what I just read.

And that is why our society is failing folks.

Stall the process why you go exceed your balances on your credit cards and miss a mortgage payment.

I remember something like this with student loans. My parents had great credit, so the government would give them enough loan money to cover my fee bill. But my parents wouldn't get the loan so I was stuck. Classmate's parents had shite credit so he qualified for extra loan money on his own (but turned the loan down. His parents other shite choices were enough to get him plenty of free money). Crazy thing is, I was working and being responsible, paying my bills on time, and he was lazy and had no credit.

I don't think you've got that right. It is income based, not credit based unless this is maybe for a business? Regardless, as someone who only qualified for an SBA loan after Katrina, I advise you to call again because it was commonplace after Katrina to call 3 different times and get 3 different answers. On top of that after Katrina, it might take 3 hours of calling and hanging up to get through without a busy signal. It was like us old LSU Alumni who remebmer trying to dial REGGIE as soon as registration opened at LSU, only 10,000,000 times worse.

So the moral of the story is:

The next time a disaster is forecast for your area, go run every credit card up to the max, don't pay your house or car note, let your credit score drop like a rock, and you'll be in better shape than if you did everything responsibly.
