I tried searching the board as well as Google searching this high level topic, so forgive me if I missed a thread that already exists. I started a PS4 RPG thread a few days ago, but figured I would include PC and any other consoles. I am looking for another RPG to get addicted to and thought it would be fun to discuss these games. It is my favorite genre of games, specifically open world RPG's and RPG's with a lot of treasure hunting, looting, and customization.

Naturally I played Diablo II and WoW and found those every enjoyable. Still play Diablo 2 pretty often. Didn't like Diablo 3 all that much, it was okay, IMO.

I have admittedly not delved into more obscure RPG's. Lately I have been playing Witcher 3, which is an awesome game. The only element I don't like is you have to play as Geralt, you don't get to make your own character, but that's a minor nitpick.

I played Skyrim a few years ago, but honestly didn't get too far and I am reinstalling it on my PC to get back into it.

Hope you guys want to discuss role playing games.

It probably play more jrpgs than wrpgs. I loved Skyrim and so far it's probably my favorite wrpg. I haven't played the Witcher yet and I'm going to wait for the GOTY edition. Dragon Age Inquisition was ok.

Just started the Mass Effect series.

Big Final fantasy/JRPG guy here. Just beat witcher 3 and am anxiously waiting FF15.

About 99-08 I was a big gamer then college, women, and drinking came around and I put the sticks down for awhile except for madden. Got an xbone for Xmas this past year as a means to do something on my off days other than drink so far I've only been playing halo and witcher 3

In the 99-08 period I played
all final fantasys
Legend of dragoon (classic),Legend of legaia, Lost odyssey (sorry I never finished this) Chrono cross,
Chrono trigger,Kingdom hearts among others

I really take my time with them so I know I haven't played nearly as much as others but for me, you can have all the fps and online stuff. Not saying I don't enjoy those type of games but there's nothing better than a gripping single player rpg with a story that sucks you in like you're reading a book and you don't want to miss a second of every cut scene

You will love the witcher, really fun game. I am waiting for Skyrim on PS4 before I get back into playing it. Don't know if there will be a way to transfer characters.

I play a lot of JRPGs.

A very good one is Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch. I highly recommend it.

The Tales games are good. I really like Vesperia and Zesteria.

Everyone should play ME1 and ME2.

No No Kuni is great, but Zestiria was probably my least favorite of the Tales. I may just be burnt out because I played a lot around the same time.

Everyone needs to get Persona 5!

I was a runescape player in school. The newest version of the game is not nearly as good as the old game was so I quit.

Haven't really played much of anything else for PC but I want to give skyrim a try.

I see this game mentioned on here quite a lot. Not familiar with the series. Is each game subsequent to the previous? Would I need to start from the beginning?

Damn just read it's only for PlayStation :(

Yeah, to bad it's not on PC so more can play it. If you ever get the chance each Persona game has its own story.

JRPGS and wRPGs really are apples and oranges. I haven't played through many JRPGs, but Tales of Xillia 1 and 2 are fantastic. I don't think you can go wrong with modern Tales games in general. Final Fantasy 4, 6, 10, and 12 are also great even though I have never beat them. I'd also recommend Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2 and Final Fantasy 7 Crisis Core if you count them as JRPGS.

For wRPGs, the Dragon Age series is pretty popular. I've only completed Dragon Age II, but I got several hours into Origins. I don't care too much for Inquisition, but I own it on PC and PS4.

KOTOR 1 and 2 are two of my favorite games of all time and have aged surprisingly well for being over 10 years old. I'd like to play Jade Empire if the PC port didn't have so many issues on modern PCs.

Any Bethesda RPG will offer unprecedented immersion, but I wouldn't play them for the story. I've never beaten a Fallout game, but the Elder Scrolls series in particular offers a huge amount of replay value

For European RPGs, the Witcher 3 obviously. I don't feel much of a desire to go back and play the first two as I find them deeply flawed. The Risen series is a franchise I want to like, but found the combat made the game almost unplayable. Gothic 4: Arcania is a somewhat underrated RPG on a smallish budget. Fable 1-3 are all great. Fable 1 is another one of my favorite games but 2 and 3 are enjoyable all the same.

I'm also a fan of some lesser known Diablo clones like Dark Alliance and the Champions of Norrath series.

I'm a big fan of the old school isometric party-based RPG's akin to Baldur's Gate. 2014 we had Divinity: Original Sin, which I absolutely loved. And then last year we year we had Pillars of Eternity, which is probably one of my all-time favorite RPG's.

Divinity: Original Sin 2 comes out this December.

Had never heard of this. I loved playing Baldur's Gate way back, and all the Diablo games. May need to check it out. It's less than $30 on amazon.

It is excellent. A bit quirky, a LOT of reading (though not as much as PoE), but the combat strategy portion of the game is where it really shines. You might watch some videos showing gameplay to get an idea.

D:OS is the best RPG available on current gen consoles, imo (it's a PC port). But I too am a lot bigger fan of tactical turn based RPGs with the isometric view like this rather than action RPGs.

The PC release of D:OS received hundreds of critical awards. The enhanced edition console port added even more to it like full voice acting for all NPCs. Some praises of the PC version (copied from Wiki):

quote:

Eurogamer described the game as "hands down the best classic-style RPG in years",

quote:

IGN wrote that the game was "one of the most rewarding RPGs to come along in years" and lauded its depth, personality, and combat challenges

quote:

GameSpot named D:OS the PC Game of the Year

My only complaint is that it does start off a little slow. The murder mystery you have to solve to start the game is it's tutorial and the game really takes off after that mission is complete, but that mission can take hours to get through. Between talking to everyone in the opening town, learning inventory management, exploring nearby areas and learning the combat system, that first mission could last 5-10 hours if you work slow.

Xcom 2 comes to consoles in September too. Havent played it on PC, so really looking forward to this as well.

Has anybody tried Pier Solar for xbone? It's one of the few turned based RPGs for xbone and is 16 bit. That's right up my alley. I wanted to try either that, child of light, or divinity: original sin before FF comes out. DOS looks awesome

Fallout 4 is an excellent choice if you don't mind an extremely slow paced RPG

Watching gameplay videos for DOS. Looks great. Also looks like it requires a lot of patience. Going to have to check it out. How's the story?
