There is a huge difference between "going to college" and "graduating from college." The real victims of the higher ed scam are the marginal students who end up with nothing to show from the experience but a few 1000 and 2000 general ed courses, and a bunch of debt.

Cous Cous, the title is a tease and more figuratively pointing toward the article. I will concede though that your argument is true.
However, you have to agree at least with the data points that in today's economy completing college will get you further, barring hitting the social economical lottery.

Considering that basically everyone has a college degree now, it makes sense that the job market would consist of those with degrees.
Degrees are so watered down that having one is basically the equivalent of graduating high school in the 80's.
To stand out nowadays you need a worthwhile degree from a good school.

I'm still of the opinion that we need to be much more aggressively pushing the average to below average student to go to trade schools. Even better if they do more with the vo-tech programs in high school.
Trust me when I tell you that the welders/pipefitters/boilermakers along the central gulf coast are getting paid stupid money and we still can't get enough of them for all of the upcoming work.

But going to college is a waste...
It is a waste for some people. Just because you go to/graduate from college doesn't mean you are an intelligent individual and it certainly doesn't mean you will be successful. They are not mutually exclusive. One would think it should go without saying (due to common sense, but then again this thread was started) that the majority of people that are capable of graduating from college are going to be of average/above average intelligence and will have proven that they have some ambition and some will and drive. A person that possesses those qualities will more than likely be successful at anything they attempt to do, including making a living and competing in the job market.
With that being said, if you are a skilled person, an intelligent person, and also have ambition then a college degree could very well wipe your arse and not make a difference. Successful people will be successful in this world at anything they do. You think the general contractor that built your home needed a college degree? You think you need a degree to sell insurance or real estate? You think you need a degree to run a HAAS machine? What about a carpenter? What about a small private business owner? IT? Etc....

Albeit true, I am looking at this from a pure job acquiring view point.

No way I have the job I do today if I did not complete my schooling, and I feel bad for people when I meet them and think no way they can get out of this position in life, not because of social implications but more so they do not and had not put an importance on education.

College is never a waste as long as you get something out of it. People need to stop thinking of it as solely a career training. Value is subjective.
However, I think in a couple of decades post secondary education will look much differently and people will get their education at home.

Well absolutely College Grads get more jobs because they have higher education levels. Still stands that college can get you a job where you are in a comfortable environment every day but maybe paid less than a lot of people who go to trade school and are willing to sweat every day. To me it all comes down to what you want to do with your life.

I don't doubt that college grads get jobs easier.
But many of the courses and degrees are pretty worthless in terms of providing meaningful information to the student.
fricking gender studies... Really?

I get what all of you are saying. From a pure social economical standing from study suggests that it's almost vital to survive your standard of life through a recession.

I think the rub is that college costs have outpaced wage growth and that college grads are taking jobs that dont require a degree, but due to the labor supply og college grads, employers want one because they dont have to pay a premium to get it.
well thats part of it. A big part. I'd add that the guy with a trade will have something to fall back on when all the BA, BS, and MBAs are laid off and have no skill/trade to fall back on.
