The Wiki article posted is right. In 1977 when we had one season of AAA baseball in the Superdome, we were the Pelicans, and Denver had Bears. At some point, OBVIOUSLY, they changed the name before the late 1980s.
When Denver as awarded a Major League franchise, the AAA franchise had to go and New Orleans was certified as a AAA city given its size and support of the Saints. The Denver group headed by Z's owner John Dikeou was contested by another ownership group headed by Mr. Benson who purchased or had an arrangement to purchase a AA franchise. He had already bought the rights to the name "Pelicans."
There was controversy in the city over all of this for months. The name Zephyr (for the Burlington Northern passenger train, and the mythical west wind) also fit with the beloved roller coaster at Pontchartrain Beach Amusement Park which closed in 1983.
According to baseball rules, the higher classification wins out in any dispute like this, so we got the Denver franchise. Mr. Benson has never forgiven, so to say, anyone involved and it's often stated that he has never and will never set foot in Zephyr Field. He took the Pelicans nickname off the table for baseball when they renamed the NBA team.
The NBA wouldn't let us switch with the Jazz, and would likely sue anyone who used Jazz.
