We have two in our backyard right now. I started playing a "hoot" call over my outdoor speakers and they show up in a matter of seconds and just start staring me down. They will even call back. Pretty cool. I've gotten some great pictures.
They are really stealth though. I'll turn around and its suddenly there on the roof right above me like its Batman or something.

Ron Magill taught me that owls are dumb as a doorknob.

I hear them a lot at night. When a bunch of them get going, it's freaky.

Imagine this was the last thing you ever see.

I had one who routinely would chill out on my fence in my old place. Every night I could go out there and he'd just be there staring at me. Honestly it was pretty creepy.

In Mexican folklore, owls are witches that turn into black birds the size of humans. They'll attack people who think they've done them wrong or steal their children to use in their cult rituals. If the Lechuza hangs around your house a couple nights in a row, watch out. There's a lot more to it, but that's a quick summary. Cool read if you're bored.

They are badass birds. Used to see a huge one as the sun had settled to near dark on our cousin's land next to our property in the country back in the '80s. Could see it's silhouette and hear it hoot but sounded wicked.
I tried to emulate it's call and sometimes get a response back. It would stay in a huge oak tree near their barn next to the road. Then I would see it take flight across the bayou.
Pretty sure it was a Barred Owl. Here's a page with some audio along with photos and other info https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Barred_Owl/id

I was walking my dog in mandeville and one swooped over our head. I just happened to look up an see it. A car passing buy saw it and came screeching to a stop asking what it was. The wing span was huge.
