He got a lot of Country airplay,and was damn sure influential on country music long term.
The song Kentucky Rain,one of the masterpieces of the 20th Century,Written by Eddie Rabbit,one of the greatest country songs ever.

We were into country back then, still prefer Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Hank. More a fan of the sound of Luckenbach, Texas to this day than Garth who I haven't listened to since I was a kid.
But back then we listened to Garth non-stop.

His influence is top 3. He fundamentally changed the style and sound of country music.

Liked him a lot back in the day, but his music has not held up well at all over the years. I found one of his old CD's(Ropin the Wind) several months ago and listened to it, and a lot of the songs were cringe worthy bad.
His influence can't be ignored though, so I'd probably put him in the top 10. He was HUGE back in the day.

terrible... I was just glad that his rise in popularity was parallel with the emergence of the alt. country movement... I'm sure it wasn't a coincidence..

Not a country fan.... But.........
Garth has to be given some credit as he at least did co-write a few songs (with some of Nashville's finest) instead of just having songs hand fed to him by the corporate machine.
His success was done brilliantly promoted by the label and marketing management in the late 80's and 90's.
Most of the acts today (Bro Country) are just handed hits and then promoted by the label creating a money machine for the label. Many of the acts today aren't really talented much less musicians.
What Garth did back in his spotlight is something that the acts today can not recreate or achieve today. Have to respect the man for what he did while his time of happening even if you don't like him personally, his music or country music in general.
