Moving Costs

Wasn't sure where else to post this but since it involved $ figured I'd go with MT.
Moving from Houston to Austin this fall and finally done asking friends to help move big furniture (even though i'm the guy with the truck that helps them move every time and they owe me technically).
Being optimistic we plan to move all the small stuff in several trips over a month or so and then we'd like to hire someone to help fill a Uhaul with our big stuff in Houston and then unload the truck in Austin.
-Should we hire the same company for both?
-Hire separately in each city?
-Does anyone have any suggestions for who to hire(excluding the guys hanging out in home depot parking lots in houston)?
-Cost estimation?

You can go on the uhaul rental website and see people and their rates. I found a guy with good reviews that would move things for $10 an hour. He worked like a dog for 5 hours and I gave him $100

When I moved cross country, I hired people on each end to help pack/un-pack. For a move from Houston to Austin, you could hire to pack the U-Haul on one end, drive your self, then hire to unpack on the other end and get it all done in one weekend.

If you're willing to pay a mover, I'd first just offer the money to your friends. They also have small moving companies that would probably do Houston to Austin. Get a quote from Two Guys One Truck and anyone like them.
A van line can be quite pricey, but if you're willing to shell out the money it is the worth it IMHO. Everyone knows that moving sucks; however, when I took a new job the relocation package included the van line, and it was incredible. They even packed for us (they are required to because they insure all of your belongings for the move) and all you need to move is your firearms and cleaning products.
I'd stay away from Craigslist if that idea crossed your mind. Good luck.

I just moved here as well(from NOLA) so welcome aboard!
Wish I could be of help but wife's company paid for van line to ship and we just paid some packers.
After moving between dorms, apartments, and houses 8 or so times in the last 10 years I was so over being involved at any point

Ive moved from Louisiana to Charlotte last year and hired movers to load/unload the truck. Worked well for us.
I used Thumbtackto find the movers. List what you have, and different companies will send you quotes. You can choose who you want based on ratings and such.
Cost usually is by the hour... most estimates are ~$150 minimum and then $50 hour or something like that.

I've used movinghelpdotcom for hiring movers. You can read the reviews and decide which ones to hire. Generally the cost is about $150-$200 for 2 people for 2 hours. That is simply the heavy lifting and loading/unloading the truck.
Rent the truck yourself and hire different help on both ends. You will get out for $300-$400 plus the cost of the truck.
I've done it a few times and has worked like a charm every time.

Last summer I moved from the Arklatex area to Baton Rouge. I rented the biggest truck at Uhaul and a dolly for one of the cars, got a bunch of friends to help me load, and realized I still had a bunch of stuff. Paid a couple hundred bucks in BR to unload the first truck. Drove back to the old house in our car, rented the next largest uhaul truck, and filled it to the brim. Ended up having to rent a trailer to get the last little bit of my stuff.
2 trucks, trailer, dolly, one set of movers, fuel for my wifes car and the trucks, some of the packing supplies, and one night in a hotel totaled $1600. Luckily it was all tax deductible.
Between a baby and my wife inheriting 30 years worth of teaching supplies from her mother, we had way more stuff than I realized.
Just a few years before that we were able to easily move in one day with a set of movers and a truck for ~$500

Don't get estimates online, they will cost you an arm an a leg. When I moved, I was getting 2500 estimates from sites. Then I went on yelp and found one guy in Houston(his name was Robert). He's a latino and has one guy working for him. Charged me $900. They disassembled then assembled, wrapped things up. Everything arrived in one piece.

I moved from Houston to Austin last summer. I rented a large u haul trailer and used Uhauls website to reserve company at Houston to load and company in Austin to unload. I picked the cheapest ones. they were around 90 an hour or something.
I didn't have extremely nice furniture and only 1BR apt worth. they showed up on time (were an hr late in Auatin) and technically completed the task. they did not necessarily take care of my items or plan out how to load.

If you're not on an incredibly tight schedule, try using PODS. I did some price checking and they were far cheaper for me than a Uhaul
