How do you feel when a black guy calls you boss man?

Yesterday, I was waiting for a business to open and an older guy, mid 50s, walked out. As he walked by, he says "what you say there bossman?"
I paused for a moment, and responded with a simple "good morning, sir. Doing alright?". He was old enough to be my father.
It happens to me 2-3x a week, and I always feel awkward as hell when it does.

I think that's just a term of endearment if you will... Not much different than bro and such.
Don't think it's related to blacks calling whites master and what not. You may be overthinking this.

Like an empowered white man, just like my great great great grandpa Lee

I've never thought anything of it.

You're overthinking it. It's just an expression. Your response was appropriate.

The only black guys that call me that are my employees, and since I'm their boss, I don't find it odd.

I feel like that's the way it should be at all times

I prefer HNIC or Pharaoh. I've heard both of those.

I like it. I was also accused of being a racist last night. I hold the door open for black peoples all the time so that's bullshite

Agreed, but given that happened in prison/slave culture, it's interesting.
I've noticed a few things about those who do it: always well spoken, in good humor, visibly middle-class, and are not interracial.
Just seems odd to me that a person such as that would say it. It never seems like anyone who would have been incarcerated or have any previous experience saying it.
...yeah, I'm overthinking it.

As long as you don't reply, "Doing fine, boy" it's all good.

I once had a black dude with whom I was working call me "master." It made me very uncomfortable, and I said something about it. I thought he was fricking with me. Turns out it as just something he said to people. Like saying dude or man. fricking weird.
