Check out line protocol

You walk into a convenience store to grab a snack after gassing up. There is 10+ foot space between the counter and the product aisles. There is already a customer at the check out counter but you are ready to check out. There are a few other customers ready to get in line at the counter as well.
Do you:
1. Get a couple of feet behind him while leaving ample space? Say 4 feet.
2. Go all the way back to the beginning of the aisle to wait, leaving a 10+ feet easement between you and the counter.
If #2. Why the frick would you do that? Now you have people backed up in the aisle and you make other customers coming from another area of the store think there is no line. You have 2 or more people backed up in the candy aisle and Mr. just wanted a soda strolls over from the drink cooler thinking it is wide open. All because your dumbass wants to form a line 10+ feet from the register. If you do this, just know that you are a dumbass.

What you don't do is get right up behind the guy. I know it's cultural and all that jazz but when someone slides up to within bad breath distance behind me, it pisses me off.
Personally, I prefer to wait in my car and then curse them out for cutting.

I just ask, "anybody in line, then, where is the end of the line?"

It's a dick move. Just an ignorant lack of situational awareness.

I give space because people used to buy porno mags at gas stations and I wanted them to have their privacy. Old habit I guess.

Nearly had to do this when buying two 20 pound bags of ice recently. Didn't think I'd be able to get to the counter because a guy was typing on his phone blocking the isle. No one was at either register so I decided there was enough room to get by him. It was the isle by the door. A lady came in and I almost ran into her trying to get around him. She and I said excuse me to each other. She motioned for me to go ahead. He kept typing. When I walked out, he was still standing there typing & reading, oblivious to everything that had happened.

I send my two black kids running to hold my place in line while I finish shopping. Nobody has the balls to say shite.
