It's been a while since we had a good WWII thread on here. SO what's some of your favorite aircraft from WWII and why?

Everyone knows and loves aircraft like the P-51, P-38, BF-109, B-17, etc, etc. But what about some of the "other" aircraft from WWII that are not quite as popular? Anyone else interested in or just generally like these? If so, which ones?

Some of the ones I like...
Douglas TBD Devastator Torpedo Bomber

(One of the first models I built when I was a kid)

SM.79 Sparviero

(I built a model virtually identical to this one)

Macchi C.202

Henschel HS-129

Consolidated PBY Catalina

(I had a great model of this until my then 3 yr old son decided he wanted to play with it one day )

P-26 Peashooter

(Yes it was obsolete and on the way out at the start of the war. But it still saw use early on in the Pacific and was even able to shoot down a few A6M Zeros over the Philippines)

Couple of weeks ago in Lafayette, they flew in a B17, B24, B29, P51 2 seater and a couple of other WWII planes. You could pay to take a flight in any of them. The P51 was $1000 or some such shite.

You would have liked that.

Not many people know about the MB.157, a French fighter that out-performed anything else at the beginning of WWII. Here is the only prototype completed, in German colors...

quote:

There is still some debates about the real performance of the engine, but rumors say that it is no coincidence that the team that analyzed the engine was the same that also worked on the most powerful versions of the FW-190 engine. Several articles claim that the MB.157's top speed was 441 mph. Even though the aircraft probably didn't carry any armament, this speed would have been exceeding anything that flew at that time.

Anybody that has an interest in WWII aircraft should go visit the Air Museum in Palm Springs, CA. It's located around the back side of the airport. It has a great collection of aircraft, mostly WWII era (including a Catalina) but also a few jets. All of the planes in the collection can and do fly. Also there are always very helpful veterans there who will talk your ear off about any of the aircraft in the collection. If you happen to be in Palm Springs it's a must-see and worth the trip even if you have to drive a few hours out of your way.

You'd love my dad's "Marine Room." He has photos (sometimes of the one he flew, sometimes just a photo of the model) of every plane he flew while in the Marine Corps.

He flew in WWII, Korea and Vietnam.

His favorite plane to fly (even better than an F4) was the Tigercat:

A World War II pilot is reminiscing before school children about his days in the army air corps.

"In 1942," he says, "the situation was really tough. The Germans had a very strong air force. I remember, " he continues, "one day I was protecting the bombers and suddenly, out of the clouds, these fokkers appeared.

(At this point, several of the children giggle.)

I looked up, and right above me was one of them. I aimed at him and shot him down. They were swarming. I immediately realized that there was another fokker behind me."

At this instant the girls in the auditorium start to giggle and boys start to laugh. The teacher stands up and says, "I think I should point out that 'Fokker' was the name of the German-Dutch aircraft company"

"That's true," says the pilot, "but these fokkers were flying Messerschmidts."

Big fan of the Catalina myself.

I think the B-25 Mitchell, which is of course the bomber used in the Doolittle raid launched from the USS Hornet, is just a fine airplane.

Probably not a lesser known but since you didn't mention it, the F4U Corsair is pure awesomeness. Whistling Death.

There seems to be quite a few plane enthusiasts in this thread. A guy I know from the park (dog, not gloryhole thank you ) said his dad had escaped German gunfire by dropping "aluminum strips" or something along those lines to confuse the German radar.

Anyone else heard of that? If so, what planes would have been capable of that? Are they "lead planes" or what? TIA

The "Black Cats" mission in CoD World at War is one of my favorite video game missions of all time. If you haven't played it, you get to go after the Japanese Navy in a PBY Gunship.
