I'm reserving judgment on this incident until LSUTANGERINE weighs in with the facts.

That account sounds about as justifiable as it gets. Could have been a little problem following him out of the store, but only attempting to get the license plate and retreating once confronted is the reason he's been released.

That is a perfect example of a responsible gun owner. He didn't come in guns blazing, but resorted to it only as a last resort.
Also a perfect example of picking your battles. If a dude with a gun tells you to gtfo you should probably do it.

INCIDENT UPDATE FROM MANDEVILLE PD:
The Mandeville Police Department has completed interviews with all the witnesses from the shooting scene, reviewed store video footage of the confrontation, and interviewed the shooter. The video supports the witnesses statements as follows:
The deceased entered the store and made a purchase. He immediately began berating the store clerk, using racial slurs and appeared to be in a highly agitated state. The clerk ordered the deceased to leave the store and threatened to call police. The deceased exited and re-entered the store several times during this incident, becoming more aggressive each time. The clerk did in fact request police come and remove the subject from the store. The shooter, who was inside the store trying to make a purchase and carrying a visible firearm holstered on his side, attempted to de-escalate the situation advising the deceased to leave the store. The deceased left but returned throwing what appears to be potatoes chips at the clerk. The shooter then follows the deceased outside to get his vehicle license plate number for the police. When the deceased saw the shooter getting his plate info, he exited his vehicle and physically attacked the shooter. After being attacked, the shooter drew his firearm and order the subject back. The shooter tried to retreat into the store but the deceased follows him, continuing to attack the shooter. The video shows the deceased, who his larger than the shooter, physically shoving and pulling the shooter back and forth. The video also shows the deceased attempting to grab for the firearm. The shooter order the deceased back and told him he would shoot him if he did not stop. The shooter retreated into a corner of the store while still being attacked. With nowhere left to retreat, the shooter fires one round striking the deceased. The deceased does not stop his attacks and the shooter fires two more rounds, striking the subject, who then falls to the ground.
Based upon the aforementioned evidence, no charges have been filed against the shooter. The case will be referred to the District Attorney’s office for further review. The Coroner’s Office has already released the deceased name and the shooter’s name is not being released at this time, due to safety concerns.
Damn.

I agree 100%. The shooter did everything textbook. I was taught in my concealed carry class that if my weapon is drawn, and if I have time, to back away from the aggressor to show that I am in a defensive position at all times. If I was in that situation, I probably do not follow person out to get plate info, but that's just me.

Yeah, especially if the store has video.

it can be argued he shot way too late.

Since the bad guy didn't have a gun or knife (I assume) you need to be absolutely sure that you have exhausted all ways to get yourself out of harms way before shooting. The longer the good guy took to warn the bad guy, the better for his defense.

i'd probably be scared as frick to shoot someone too but that guy kept going after and going after him, one slip up could have ended his own life if he was unable to hold the guy off.

Agreed. Scary situation. That's why I don't follow that dude out the store.

Sounds like the shooter did the world a favor. Dude was nuts and a danger to society.

I carry every day and I would have left that fricker alone on my way out of the store and down the street. Not worth going to jail
