Why are some areas of the world so woefully less advanced?

There are parts of the world that have been around for much longer than Western Europe and definitely than whatever has been going on in North America. It seems where most people think life got its start and where most of the ancient history lies is just stuck in the BC times. You can blame government oppression and religion only for so long.

These are areas where mankind first made their big advances and inventions. Since then, nothing. What gives?

Government and the desire to try to live in areas that are basically deserts.

More government = less advancement. You can even see it happening now in the western world. We advanced so quickly because of the government we created when we first formed. But as things continue to become more regulated, advances in things like medicine slow down. This happened to the eastern part of the world much sooner, and they've been under strict control by people who want to keep advancement to a minimum to keep power

On a serious note, perhaps it has something to do with the need to improve. Necessity is the mother of all invention after all. If you look at civilizations in the tropics, there was little need to improve since the weather was conducive and resources were plentiful. The farther north you go, the more advanced you have to become in order to thrive. The same is true as you head south.

I may be completely off base, but by and large countries and civilizations in the tropics - between the Tropic of Capricorn and the Tropic of Cancer - are the least developed in the present day.

In order to have a country club you must have a ghetto.

The world is just like this but on a larger scale. We're lucky to live in America where even the most poverty stricken can become morbidly obese.

Tribal culture. Much of the Middle east and Africa is full of different ethnic, cultural, and religious groups. Most of these groups hate each other and are usually fighting or campaigning against each other. Hence the constant conflict in these area. Corrupt dictatorships that often enflame these tensions don't help much either.

Warfare and the consolidation from wars creates the capacity for growth and expansion. The industrial revolution brought about the rail network making countries much smaller and easier to control and secure. The only advances in transportation done in these countries were financed by imperial powers who had an economical incentive to pull resources out, stunting the ability for these countries to advance their infrastructure. As the colonial age ended the power vacuum created was so great in some parts of the world that the cycling power structures never can sustain positive growth. It's like trying to climb a ladder with missing rungs.

I'd say infrastructure, primarily transportation is one of the biggest elements of building a successful country. Been the truth as far back as the Ancient Romans and early Chinese Dynasties.

Religion and corruption

ETA: backwards religious beliefs based in ideology from hundreds of years ago slow progress.

Corruption then e sure that any money to go towards progress goes into the pockets of the most ruthless MFer around.
