I don't know how much input singers have in what they choose to sing and what is chosen or available for them.

Nashville is a music factory. The record companies have a system & division of labor they prefer. Get a talented singer, put them in a studio with the record company's chosen producer & session musicians, and have them record songs they didn't write. It's been this way for decades. The whole outlaw movement was a rebellion against this system. The record companies like to control the whole process with a select few professionals. However, songwriters are often outside of their control. There are always a ton of songs floating around. George Strait had his pick of any song for 20+ years. Everyone else was picking after him.

Neil Diamond

Neil is greatness. Writes his stuff and owns all of his masters from '66 on. My favorite album of all time is:

And Strait is great. Don't know where I'd rank him but he kept it traditional.

Probably top 10 or so...solid voice but none of his songs give me chills or make ya go 'wow'!

Off hand I'd rank above him..

George Jones
Merle
Keith whitley
Hank Sr
Garth
And the most underrated ever...Ronnie milsap

Another failed list by dukke v. No Waylon. No Willie. No care.

He's the best C&W golfer. As far as music, I don't know that I would have him my top 10. Very good, but not great.

I'd be hard pressed to find TEN country singers who are better. Ten is a big number when talking GOATS.

Somewhere below Eric Church and above Jason Aldean

Seriously, I don't think he'd make my top 25

I have seen him live, and was unimpressed both times. He just kinda stands there with a guitar on and rarely plays a chord. Love his music though

So did Conway and George Jones. Are you unimpressed with them as well?

Somewhat agree; I agree with those in the group (plus Haggard and Nelson) but not the ranking.

My take:

1. Hank Williams
2. George Jones
3. Cash
4. Haggard
5. Garth Brooks
6. Conway
7. Willie
8. Alan Jackson
9. George Strait
10. Randy Travis

It's all just a matter of taste!

Are we just talking male, because I don't know how Loretta Lynn and Patsy Cline are left off any top 10 of best country artists. I'd probably even throw Dolly on there.

All of the lists ITT w/o Waylon and Merle are absolute jokes.

Love George, but he'd be around 5 or so on a top 10 list. Wish he wouldn't have done Pure Country, it kind of sucked.

He's pretty great, not top 10 material though. Hell, you could probably make a top 10 of country artists from his home state that are above him.

I'd have Kris Kristofferson in my top ten just based on the songs he wrote.

I'll take your list and replace Garth Brooks with David Allen Coe.

The OP stuck with all males and I followed suit.
If you go M & F, there's no doubt Lynn, Cline (my all time favorite) and Parton would find their way into the Top 12.

You could put him in the same group as Hank Williams, George Jones, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Merle Haggard.
