Tulane Students Demand Hoda Kotb Be Dropped As Commencement Speaker, Claim They ‘Deserve Better’

LINK

quote:

We all feel cheated. Given the amount of money, work, and passion we have poured into our educational careers at Tulane, we think we deserve better than this. Hoda Kotb is hardly an inspirational figure, and despite the fact that she has had a successful career in journalism, we feel that we deserve a more recognizable and more prominent figure than her. Commencement speeches are supposed to inspire students before they are thrown into the real world. Hoda Kotb spends her time sipping wine on talk shows, and discussing which dog breed is trendiest in 2016. There’s hardly anything inspirational about that. This is an embarassment not only to the entire class of 2016, but also to the school as a whole.

I hope nobody of any consequence agrees to speak and they get stuck with Mitch Landrieu.

Sounds like the perfect speaker. Hoda has the game figured out, she drinks and talks about nothing on tv and gets paid.

Or what? They will boycott their degrees and be left (or more likely their parents left) saddled with astronomical expenses for fricking off in NOLA for 5 years with nothing to show but a beard or tattoo?

Kotb was the keynote speaker at her alma mater for the 2008 Virginia Tech graduation,[9] and in her speech, played Metallica's "Enter Sandman" over her iPod.[10] In 2010, Kotb was elected to a three-year term to the Virginia Tech Alumni Association Board of Directors.[11]

Seems decent enough?

Tulane should just cancel the ceremony and tell them they are mailing out the diplomas.

Probably something like 1,500-2,000. Doesn't mean everyone who signed the petition was a 2016 graduating Tulane student though.

ETA: Based on 8,339 undergraduates enrolled in the fall.

This has been going at various universities for a few years. Usually because the speaker isn't pc enough.

This article from the NY Times of all places is almost 2 years old.

quote:

This year, there’s the remarkable life story of the African-American scholar who grew up in the segregated South and rose to become secretary of state. Didn’t hear that one? Nobody did. Condoleezza Rice was scheduled to give the 248th anniversary commencement address at Rutgers University this coming Sunday. She canceled after a small knot of protesters pressured the university. It’s no contest who showed more class.

quote:

Thanks to the bigots, Smith College graduates will be deprived of the thoughts of Christine Lagarde, chief of the International Monetary Fund. She withdrew this week, under pressure from people who object to the I.M.F.’s role in the “strengthening of imperialist and patriarchal systems.” So, one of the world’s most powerful women will not share insights with one of the nation’s most prominent women’s colleges because of a concern about patriarchy. Evil men — that’ll show ’em.

I guess I can't blame them. If I paid $90000000000000000000 for a meh degree I'd be butthurt over everything too.

At Auburn, my commencement speaker was some woman whose claim to fame was she was an army nurse at Walter Reed in some new nursing program.

She wasn't even a good speaker.
