One night at Toys R Us when I was a kid. Even though it was after hours, they still made me wear the Giraffe smock - a clear effort to kill any remaining dignity I might've held. After a back-room, creepy orientation video I got an equally weird pep talk from the guy who ran the motorized car aisle.

I bailed like my plane was on fire.

Worked 1 day at Bass Shoes in Tanger.... I went in my shirt day and the manager told me to organize the shoes in the back by style and color. The next day the next manager had me do the same thing, only wanted it by size and color... So I walked out...

6 months, but I just transferred from a hospital to the corporate health system that was running the hospital. I'm not sure if that counts.

My old man worked for 15 minutes at one place. It was a chicken or turkey plucking place. He said he lasted 7 minutes and the other 8 were looking to a foreman to quit.

I was hired as a server at the Lonestar that used to be on Acadian. My first shift on the floor and one of the cooks dropped my tables steak on the floor. He picked it up, plated it, and said to take it out. Manager agreed and I walked.

I worked at CC's for two days and quit. Was offered a night manager position at a local subway, went in and halfway through my first day of training left because it was an absolute shite show of a store and the owner was clueless. It was going to be a side gig anyways.

I did that a couple of years as a second job when times were tight back in the early 90's. I loved it. Would have kept doing it because tis the season. Job went away when the lot did and the property owner sold it for condos.

1 night as admin of the SEC Rant. It was like air-traffic control. I lost my edge, turned in my wings. Never got paid, either.

Worked at a vet clinic one summer in college. One long time assistant thought she ran the place and tried to micromanage everybody. Told the vet that I didn't appreciate being told how to mop a floor by someone with a ged and I had just satisfied all my requirements for my bachelors degree in animal science. The girl ended up giving the vet an ultimatum that it was either her or me, since It was only a summer job for me I got let go. I think it was a week.

Worked two days as a warehouse supervisor. Only two problems with the job; there wasn't anybody to supervise and I was commuting 2.5 hours round trip. Told my boss after lunch on the second day it wasn't for me and I wouldn't be back after I finished out the day. He said he'd have my check ready and I told him not to worry about paying me, that it was a good learning experience. Started my grad school paperwork the next day.

Good gawd. I had a ton of jobs in college, many of them of short duration. I wasn't exactly a model employee.

Two come to mind. Worked in a cafeteria at OKC airport, I lasted about an hour. I told my smart arse punk boss to shove it.

Worked one afternoon selling Hoover vacuum cleaners, my sales call did not result in a sale so I left my demonstrator model on bosses front porch.

Day one as a roofer working on a hospital:

I was 18.

We were on the roof of a three storied hospital. The roof was flat. We were to scrape off the old roof then cart the debris in a wheelbarrow and dump it in a huge dumpster on the ground.

It was 115 degrees on top of that black roof, I drank 16 quarts of water and did not pee.

Worked from 6:30 am until 8:00 pm. There was no ending time we worked until the boss said stop.

I started on a Thursday.

Day two Friday:

Started at 6:30 and it was a normal day until about 2:30.

At 2:30 the boss shows up and two guys haul a huge cooler up to the roof.

Boss yells. "It's Friday boys."

The work continues at the same pace but the cooler is full of cold beer which we are now drinking.

I think the day will end around 3:00 or 4:00 and it is incredibly hot so I am hitting the beer pretty hard.

5:30 rolls around and I realize that I am on a high roof with a wheelbarrow full of tar and debris weighing over a hundred pounds and I am walking said wheelbarrow to the edge of the roof and dumping it into a dumpster on the ground and I am pretty drunk.

Then the incident happened.

There are two guys on the crew who are half-brothers with the same dad and different moms. They are named Anthony and Tony.

Anthony is on the roof with me and Tony is on the ground and his job is to pick up the debris that misses the dumpster and throw it in.

Tony starts in on Anthony's mom calling her fat and a slut. Well Anthony gets angry and starts dumping his debris on the ground completely missing the dumpster.

This goes on for an hour.

Then Tony pitches a profanity laced fit which we all go to the edge of the roof to watch.

I am standing on the edge of the roof about ten feet from Anthony when Tony pulls out a Derringer pistol and fires two shots at Anthony.

No one is hit by the bullets.

Boss yells "There he goes again."

We work until 6:30.

Climbing the two ladders down to the ground drunk is one of the scariest things I have ever done.

I don't go back. I don't collect my pay. I just disappear from the job.
