To the 'run and hide' folk......
I bet you wouldn't run if the enemy had taken your land, raped your wife and sisters and killed your father and brothers.
I'd like to think you'd go apeshit in the middle of that hell!
I'll take a small, strong shield and a diphos.

Interesting tidbit of info- the British Army was using cavalry with lancers well into World War I.

how would I be alive if all that happened?
I am just being honest. I have never been a coward so I doubt I really would be. The survival instinct in me says lay low and pick a few off at a time though. Running in to mass chaos seems to be a dumb way to try to win a battle unless you have the numbers.

Can I just hang back and lob arrows into the enemy lines from a safe distance?

They all were.
The French went into the war with cavalry who wore bright red pants and shiny chrome breastplates.
The Russians never introduced helmets. They exited the war without ever having provided their infantry more than a cloth cap.

I don't understand how they did it. And don't say they were men back then. People get tired. A 3 minutes fist fight is exhausting. A 20 minutes fist fight is probably impossible. Running around, holding a 100 pound shield, swinging a 70+ point sword...? What? How can anyone do that for even an hour?

I read somewhere that those battles lasted 20 minutes at most, which is as long as someone in even top condition can go all out like that.

I'd stand in the way back launching fireballs from my trebuchet.

Plus they used a lot of slaves to take the brunt of deaths.
Just like the Confederacy did

Yeah, everyone is the past was stupid.
It was the most dominant form of combat and had evolved over centuries since the invention of the firearm.
It was fricking stupid.
