Why wouldn't they be? A 28 is 90th percentile.

gets proven to be an idiot

calls everyone a liar

but you are right, a 28 isn't going to get you money to an elite school, but luckily LSU isn't one of those schools

I picked USL over Tulane....LSU was never an option cause I hated BR

Looking back it was dumb because it was just to stay around my girlfriend at the time

Wish I would have went to Tulane

Because you are lying. No one would choose ULL over lsu. That is absurd

I did. My parents are not poor, but they ain't rich either. Going to ULL saved them a shite ton of money. Plus they were USL grads and my grandfather is a SLI grad. Little bit of tradition factored in too.

Not now. Son has a 29 and 3.5+.

ULL offered 1200 per semester for 4 years.
LSU offered 750 per semester for 4 years.

Not even close to a full ride (based on this alone and not including TOPS).

Is 19 tough to obtain? Seems mediocre at best.

I have 3 kids. They all took the ACT by invitation in 7th grade. Their scores were 17, 21, 20. The oldest with the 17 is now in grad school at LSU and will graduate in August. 21 is a senior and his high is a 29. 20 is a freshman -- taking ACT in April.

You know I wasn't talking about the cost of going to school, but in qualifying for TOPS. Yours is the sort of back door argument - tuition is not too high -- that people who have wanted to kill the program for years continue to use. For the record, I don't think TOPS keeps kids in Louisiana at all.

But the real problem is that the legislature has allowed higher education to raise tuition at the same time the budget cut the amount of direct funding and while it continued to fund TOPS completely. TOPS money should been locked in at a set appropriation, and the minimum qualification dependent on how many people could get tuition paid for that fixed appropriation, with the minimum score having to go up each year as tuition went up. Might be able to still do that if they wanted to try.

Lots of schools offer out of state tuition waivers if you have a good application.

I grew up in Charleston. My main family ties are to USC, but I knew I wanted to go somewhere different. 7/10 of my good friends and high school buddies were going to USC and I just felt like I needed a change. No way in hell was I going to Clemson and I didn't want to consider the other, smaller SC universities (College of Charleston, The Citadel, Furman, Wofford).

Georgia was an attractive option, but UGA is arguably the most chosen out of state school. My mom went to LSU and all of her family still resides in New Orleans. I was hoping LSU would offer an out-of-state waiver to a direct descendant of an alumnus. Apparently LSU used to offer the scholarship, but it was abolished by the time I got to applying.

Given my application, GPA, SAT - LSU ended up offering me partial, out-of-state tuition.

You have to have over a 30 before decent schools start handing out money.

Many out of state schools have awards based off of ACT that are given automatically. I know Baylor uses a graduated scale, if you have 32 or over your tuition is covered. Daughter had a 30 with a 4.0 gpa and got about 3/4 of tuition covered.

No, serious question

I'm sure someone will post the actual figures, but a 28 is a pretty damn good score.

This is what at 28 on the ACT gets you as of today. LSU tuition and fees are around $4830. Tops covers 3950. A 28 gets you $750 a semester. You would still owe $130 for Tuition and fees..
What about ULL??? Tuition and Fees are 3500. Tops covers 3100. A28 gets you 1000 a semester. You would be +600 to go towards books and dorm.

My daughter is graduating this year and there are plenty of kids in her honors classes that have a 27 or better on the ACT. In state scholarships don't even look at you until you have a 32 on the ACT.

These are just the facts that I had to edit because I can't read properly

4 year tuition is about 38-40k…

Hell, I took out student loans, spent 5 years in college without tops. I owed 12k.
Times have changed.

30 ACT and 4.0 and Baylor wouldn't cover the full tuition? I would have told them to piss off. With those scores, she's probably in the top 10% at Baylor.

his is what at 28 on the ACT gets you as of today. LSU tuition and fees are around $9660. Tops covers 3950. A 28 gets you $750 a semester. You would still owe $4960 for Tuition and fees..
What about ULL??? Tuition and Fees are 7000. Tops covers 3100. A28 gets you 1000 a semester. You would still owe 2900 for tuition and fees per semester.

No ... YEARLY tuition is $9660 TWO SEMESTERS and TOPS covers 3950 EACH semester. A 29 also gets you 750 so we would still be left with $260 PER YEAR, or $130 per semester.

In our situation it's the living expenses that for me aren't worth it when he can live at home and save a shite ton of money.

Wow, my first semester at LSU was fall of 2003. I had the lowest level of tops so no extra money. My fee bill was $425. I can't believe it has gone up that much in the last decade.

You are correct, I will edit..
However, some colleges require for you to live on campus, that must be taken into account as well.

Im not debating that scholarships don't add up to much, I was just wanting to say that a 28 is by no means unattainable and the standards for TOPS need to be improved upon. If you need to make a 23 to get into a university, then shouldn't TOPS be close to that.
