Haha, I've been watching it too. Flipping between that and the Stars game.

Gattis makes a deal with Astros avoiding arbitration. 3.3 this year with team option at 5.2 next year or 100,000 buy out.

Luhnow taking advantage of Gattis' surgery... if Gattis went to arbitration, then the arbitration contract is not guaranteed, so any set-back could cost him some money. By the sounds of it, he has a $3.4mil guaranteed contract for this year, and $5.2 next year, IF the Astros pick up the option.

Very fair deal for both parties.

Smart deal in my opinion. I don't think Gattis will ever see that 5.2. Not without a monster season. I give the FO credit for this one.

that is the exact expression I had when I read Ryno's post.

That is the most perfectly executed reaction .gif in TD history.

And Ryno -- the only way he doesn't get that $5.2 is if he gets traded. They expect him to play catcher this year to "increase his versatility". If he can DH and become serviceable enough to back up Castro -- that really opens up an extra spot on the roster. He'd be a steal at $5.2 mil if he hits like he did last year.

Lot's of "if's" though.

5.2 M isn't a huge risk if they do pick up the option next year.

Hell we're paying Tony Sipp 6M a year and he doesn't even play everyday.

That was before the surgery though. He's going to miss most of spring training now. He hasn't played catcher in well over a year and to my knowledge hasn't caught any of our pitchers. The catching plan is probably out the window now that he won't get any practice there in the spring. Remember last year's plan was to get him some time at 1st but he missed a lot of the spring with a wrist issue and that was scrapped.

I don't know man...as bad as conger was defensively If he couldn't catch last year....

I would be surprised if he catches more than 10 or 12 games.

We will definitely carry a real backup catcher, probably Stassi

As far as the gattis club option: he better be able to play the field somewhere. If not, why pick up the option (even if it is cheap)? If we believe in Tucker, White, and Duffy as being solid hitters without much defensive value, then wouldn't they be tailor made for DH? If 1 out of those 3 can hit well enough to man the DH role, why pick up the $5+ Mill option on Gattis when all of those guys are still on rookie deals for the next few years. We'd save $4.5 million-ish just on the DH spot if one of those guys can take over DH next season. Again, that's hypothetically if Gattis proves this season that he cant play D anymore.

I like Gattis and there's nothing wrong with this deal, but he was basically a replacement level player last year. If he repeats last year we shouldn't and probably won't pick up his option. There will be better routes for us to go at DH internally and externally
