Auf Wiedersehen! over 10k Americans getting degrees in Germany for $250 each

The number of Americans studying in Germany has risen sharply, recent figures show, driven in part by the low cost of higher education compared to the United States.
More than 10,000 U.S. students are presently enrolled in the country's higher education programs, according to data from the Institute for International Education
quote:
Students in Germany pay a fee to cover university administrative costs and to support student unions. This "semester fee" rarely exceeds $250, and in many cases it also covers the cost of books and public transportatio

Minnesotan Sarah Johnson, also a University of Bonn master's student, has a total monthly expenditure of $600 in Germany — or $7,200 per year. That compares to $20-30,000 dollars in tuition fees alone she would have paid back home.
It "makes all the difference" to Johnson, 25, who does not get any financial support or scholarship and has a part-time job as a hotel receptionist. Besides having the advantage of learning a foreign language and a different culture, "the system is very easy to pay for," she said.

And actually Germany is promoting us to come
quote:
"Germany and its universities have quite a good reputation in the United States," said Dorothea Rueland, Secretary General of the German Academic Exchange Service. "And we have a huge increase in courses taught in English and this obviously makes it easier for American students to channel into the German system."
More than 1,100 all-English-language classes across numerous fields have been established in recent years.

i read a Vice article a couple weeks ago about Americans who ran to Europe to avoid paying student loans
it would be a great bit if irony to move to Germany to get a new degree to get cheap college while avoiding paying back US student loans

I remember reading about this a couple of years ago. Seems like a sweet deal.
When I looked they said you had to be sort of fluent in German to do it. But now it looks like they have a lot more all English classes.

That actually sounds like fun and a good idea. Then again, I've lived my entire life in north La

My son is HS Senior. He has looked into Germany for his college education for a few years.
Cheaper to go here in State.

Do you understand the genius in Germany?
They know that trash takes the path of least resistance.
Think about if TOPS went away, and there are 4 kids in a highshcool graduating: Brytney, Mackenzie, Jalen, and George
Brytney says " I can make a good living in Beauty school
Mackenzie says "Imma be one of dem masgage therapists"
Jalen says "Process tech RPCC BAW!"
George may be the only one who can even fathom leaving the USA.
Who are the types that Germany pulls with this type of program, truly the brightest, forward thinking, adventuresome minds. This is the cream of the "bad crop"...the unfortunate higher IQs born into a lower socioeconomic status.

well i don't know how Germany measures foreign applicants, but in Germany, only that 1 person gets to go to college anyway
their system is completely different than our system and would never work here within our current legal framework

they track students
the kids who don't excel in middle school don't even get to take a high school curriculum that allows them to go to college
i think they have 3 tracks
i think it's university track, trade school track, and then one that doesn't lead to post-secondary education

There was an informative thread on PT not too long ago on the German education system
LINK
ETA: one of my friends grew up in Germany was on the university track until he moved to the US and he says it's an awesome system. They pay much higher taxes though.

The vestiges of the feudal system. So interesting to see.

This is correct. In the US if your grades are bad but you ace the SAT you can still get in to many universities. In Germany you will be doing trade school and then working as an apprentice of some sort - electrical, heating, welding, etc. You don't really get second chances if you mess up in school.
ETA: That said, the women can be hot and they like American accents.
