Fishing LSU lakes

Wondering if anyone has had any luck fishing for buffalo carp or catfish in the lakes. Not looking to eat them just something to do to pass up time.

I've fished for bass from the shoreline and caught a couple of 12-14" fish on plastic worms. Definitely not a lot of action though. If you had a depth finder on a kayak and could find the deeper areas you might be able to have some success but I think the bucket sitters (that are there damn near every day) pretty much clean the place out.

I have caught one fish in that lake the past 5 years from a kayak

For what it's worth, they had a dredging project in the lake in the 1980s. They started on The end by Acadian and started heading towards Dalrymple. They got just past the end of the sorority row before they supposedly ran out of money and stopped the project. They used some of the dredged material to build the beach and that park across the lake from the sororities. I would focus on that end, if anything.

I only bring a fishing rod as a prop so I have an excuse to anchor by sorority row in the spring.

I have a friend on the dive team for EBR. They have to recover weapons In there sometimes and he said it's the nastiest, most foul smelling water he's been in. If you keep the fish and eat the meat, God speed.
He said they always recover guns in the one under the interstate.

The small lake across from the old cow palace is where it's at. Not the shallow one behind Miller, the other one you can only access on 2 sides. The other two sides back up to private homes.

I caught some nice stringers on sorority row in the late 80s. Black worm pitched by any sticks you can find right up against the bank. Black spinner bait along the banks with no sticks. Always February.

Some of the other brec ponds around ebr are better than the LSU lakes.

Make sure you have your fishing license on hand, I know of a couple people that have gotten citations

One of our posters caught a 9 lb plus bass in 80s

FWIW, I noticed a decent amount of gar last summer during demos and my own yak testing at the big LSU lake. I wouldnt mind trying to go for a gar sleigh ride one lazy afternoon.

After a big local rain, I've seen bass caught in the current running under that bridge that crosses the lakes.

I never caught shite, but one of my ex's stepdads caught like a 7lb smallmouth in the 80s IIRC. He had it mounted at his house, but that was 10 years ago when we dated, so I'm not sure on the weight

What you speak of is the truth. Only skin mount I ever did. All the others are just pictures.

In the LSU lakes? Pretty sure that's not possible unless someone caught a smallmouth somewhere else and released it into the lakes.

My best day there was walking the bank before work one morning and I caught 14. Biggest I ever caught was around 3#. Started by the beach and walked to Sorority Row. That was about 4 years ago. It's gotten progressively worse with trash and branches. Haven't been in a couple years. Spinner bait was my go to.
