In Lafayette, Krewe of Rio, which parades two Saturdays before Mardi Gras, is a solid parade. They throw a good amount and the floats are pretty, albeit all quite similar. I did hear that their membership was down for this year though, and it did seem like most floats could have fit more riders.

The Krewe of Bonaparte is far and away Lafayette's premier parade to me. Plenty of riders (600-700), pretty floats, good bands, and they throw a TON. They're perfectly reflective of Lafayette's Mardi Gras- fun and drunk, but still family-oriented.

The Krewe of Gabriel parades on Mardi Gras Day (The King's Parade), and they are also a good one. They've used the same floats for about 10 years now, but the Krewe is comprised totally of men and they throw a lot. The Independent Parade on Mardi Gras Day is also fun because it's a total sh*t show.

If you want to attend the courir, you need to know if they allow beads and if they require hats/masks. Some are strict. I would suggest just going to Mamou and drink at Fred's and watch them come back into town.

Bogalusa

This.

The Bogalusa parade is actually pretty impressive. I mean, you are surrounded by more trashy people than most people would be comfortable with(even compared to other Mardi Gras parades) but it's a huge deal there.

Lake Charles has great Mardi Gras parades. Kids parade, dog parade, and then 2 parades on Fat Tuesday.

The best Bogalusa parade I remember, one of the all female krewes was throwing panties. Not even their own soiled ones either.

It's not that bad. Hell, most of the people I run into are from out of town. Follow along behind the Courir in your pickup truck or just go to the street dance when they come into town.

LC

ETA: Actually, the street dance on Mardi Gras Day is not nearly as big as it used to be. The Monday night dance is usually huge and wild.

Lafourche/Terrebonne Parish goes damn hard for Mardi Gras. Some of the few parishes that still give kids the whole week off of school. South Lafourche (Larose-Golden Meadow) alone has 8 parades over a two week span that I can think of off the top of my head including 3 pretty big night parades. Pretty deep line up for a small community. Houma parades throw more than any I've been to (including NOLA). Downtown Thibodaux is absolutely sick during/after parades if you're 18-30ish.

floats half empty
riders more worried about drinking than throwing
half the floats were out of beads by south college

I hear Basile has a real old school/traditional parade

Can confirm.

Basile/Mamou/etc. Mardi Gras terrifies me.

quote:

The Mardi Gras gather once a year1
To ask for charity
They gather once a year
All around the village

Captain, captain, carry your flag
Let's go visit our neighbors
Captain, captain, carry your flag
Let's go on the road

The Mardi Gras ask for the permission to enter
Of every master and every mistress
They ask for the permission to enter
With courtesy

Captain, captain, carry your flag
Let's go visit our neighbors
Captain, captain, carry your flag
Let's go on the road

Give us a little fat chicken
Yes, or a little rice
We invite you to come tonight
And eat some good gumbo

Captain, captain, carry your flag
Let's go visit our neighbors
Captain, captain, carry your flag
Let's go on the road

Would you receive these Mard Gras
This great bunch of big drunks
The Mardi Gras thank you very much
Of your good intentions

Captain, captain, carry your flag
Let's go visit our neighbors
Captain, captain, carry your flag
Let's go on the road

The Mardi Gras come from everywhere
To ask for charity
They gather from everywhere
But mostly from Big Mamou

Legit question...

I've never been to Cajun Mardi Gras...can you show up as an outside spectator or do you kind of have to know someone/be involved? If I show up in Mamou or Ville Platte on Tuesday what will my experience be, as someone visiting from BR?

Edit...didn't read thread before posting, this was addressed to some degree.

Where would be the best Monday gathering/parade and the best Tuesday gathering/parade to witness as a spectator?

Unusual if it was that many floats. When I used to ride Bonaparte, I ran out at S College once, and was glad as shite to be out, due to exhaustion.

ETA: will actually be in Eunice for the first time for the Monday night throw down. You?
