A pregnant woman has been confirmed as being among three people diagnosed with the Zika virus in New York City.
There have been four other confirmed Zika cases in New York State, reports ABC 7.

Had one earlier in Hawaii, but she gave birth to a small head baby, so I guess this is the 2nd
Didn't know about the 2 in Ill

At least 31 people in the U.S. have been diagnosed with the Zika virus in 11 states, including a pregnant woman in New York City, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Two other pregnant women were diagnosed with the disease in Illinois earlier this month.
Health officials noted that all those infected likely contracted the disease outside of the U.S. There is no current transmission of the virus in the country.
There have been reports of transmission in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, where at least 20 people have been diagnosed with the virus.

It's only from travel right? As in, pregnant women spending the entirety of their pregnancy in Ohio aren't going to have issues, yes?

There is virtually no info in that article besides the part where they're trying to make headlines.
Who is this person?
Is she Hispanic?
Did she visit a known hotspot while pregnant?
How long was she abroad?
What country did she go to?
Terrible article all around.

at least the spread of this thing means people will be more responsible about having kids they potentially can't care for

Me too. As soon as it gets to the mosquitos, it's a different ballgame.

When does the virus start to affect the child? I'd assume very early in the pregnancy. Also, how is this not picked up on an ultrasound? I have a hard time believing that the virus works that fast.

All the people diagnosed with the virus had returned to New York from countries where the Zika virus is ongoing.

This Zika stuff is freaking scary
I'll be curious to see how it affects the 2016 Olympics in Brazil. I read an article that some countries are urging their female athletes to not attend.

dunno, exposure seems to occur in the 1st trimester, but you may not be able to see its influence until the 6th month mark...when does late term abortion start?

quote:I just dont get the panic? If a woman gets bit in the first trimester it could POTENTIALLY cause a birth defect. You know what else can cause birth defects in the first trimester? Getting a cold, getting the flu, getting a fever, getting measles, getting chicken pox, falling, drinking when you dont know your pregnant, etc etc. And besides the first trimester, Zika doesnt do shite to anyone else. So yes it will be sad and we should try to prevent it, but it doesnt seem to be this crazy/scary thing that some seem to want to make it

I read its usually picked up on ultrasound by end of 2nd trimester... Far too late to do anything about it.

Is it troublesome for adults that are not pregnant? I haven't done much research.
If the only threat is to pregnant women, then I'd assume this would be no worse than West Nile concerns considering West Nile can be an issue for all ages and sexes.
