I heard a few callers on the Dave Ramsey Show talk about how they were paid lots 'o cash to simply eat at restaurants and fill out paperwork. Is this a real thing AND an easy process? Any of you have experience? Thoughts?

It's called the five-finger discount.

Apparently it's legit if you hook up with a legit company. Otherwise, it's a scam. LINK

I did it for Domino's Pizza many years ago.

Ordered pizza, paid for it, fill out a questionnaire and get reimbursed. Refund took several weeks.

I don't think it's worth the time.

I did it, back in the 80's...opportunity came thru state unemployment [ thru a friend ] just ate at taco bell, and got reimbursed for purchase

if you want the experience, go for it, you won't get rich doin it tho...

if your goal is the money, look elsewhere

I secret shopped for a restaurant in town, all they did was pay for my meal. There was no "paid lots o cash", however the food wasn't bad and I was going to eat anyway, so it worked in my favor.

I dated a girl who was a secret shopper for a magazine. We just went on dates and reviewed the food/experience. She would later go write the article. That style of job got killed by yelp.

My wife did it when we were younger. She wouldn't get paid a lot, per se. But would get money to spend at different places and then report on the experience. The best we ever got was $150 to eat at Sullivan's.

Edit for typo

My mom was. It was more work than you would expect and it didn't pay well. If you wanted the good gigs you had to work for a long time. The only free food she got was sonic.

I dated a girl a few years back who did this alot. I think she was just using me for the jobs she did.

She would call me and we would go hit 6 -Jack in the box drive thrus and time the wait.. Give all the food to the homeless guy on the corner, then go to dinner at Logans road house. She would order a steak and a salad and appetizer. Then we would go spend the night at the Sheraton down town.

She didn't make alot of money at this, but got alot of free perks. She had a good day job as well.

If my memory is right, she got $10 each plus reimbursed for food and Jack in box, The meal at Logan was free, as was the night at the Sheraton.

She told me you had to do it often and provide good reports to get the best jobs.

I do occasionally. Like others have said, you usually get reimbursed for the cost of the activity (dining or hotel stay), but some will give you an extra cash payment (like working out at a gym, you get the cost of a day pass plus a little extra). There are other things like placing a call to a retirement home and asking about their services and rating their service and such, but nothing that pays out significant cash that I've seen. I'll do a restaurant every now and then. It generally ranges from $25 reimbursement or a sandwich shop up to $150 for a steakhouse. I did a gym once just to go workout somewhere different for free.

A buddy of mine did this during college.

I wouldn't say there was lots of money involved, but a decent enough amount for not a lot of work, and you get to keep what you purchase.
