re: Pros and Cons of Living in Lafayette

This is true. I was trying to describe Lafayette to a friend of mine who is from New Roads, but has lived in New Orleans for the past 3 years or so. I told him it was a mid sized city that likes to have a good time, etc...
I ended up taking him to festival international and I ran into about 15-20 people that I knew as the night went on. His comment was that regardless of the amount of people who live in Lafayette, it was a "town" and had a town feeling.
It really changed my mindset of Lafayette. I never really thought of it that way, and it gave me a different perspective (especially because I've lived away for a while).

I think Lafayette folks are extremely closed minded when it comes to outsiders. If you aren't from there, you're not "one of them."
I've seen people here say it and I never would have guessed that to be the case. My experience is more often than not, people move here for college or a job and never leave.

I hate that many people feel this way about the area. I've lived here my whole life and became good friends with guys from England, South Africa, and New Zealand in college. I also married someone of both Honduran and Italian descent and my brother married a Korean woman. I've always been interested and even fascinated by people from other areas, and I grew up in Henderson The people I associate with on a regular basis are just as open minded. You simply have to be willing to ignore the ignorant in any area and not rush to judgement about an entire area.
I'm from Baton Rouge, and unfortunately I always felt like Cajun people never really liked me very much. I lived in Lafayette for a few years, and worked in the oil field with a lot of Cajuns. I thought they were really funny people but I just never fit in with them at all.. Some were very nice, but just seemed insincere I guess..Like they knew I was an outsider. Probably because I look and act differently than them.

This was essentially my experience as well. I worked there for a couple years. It's not that people were ever rude, they were typically very friendly. But everyone, my coworkers included, just didn't seem comfortable around me. Like I just didn't "get it" and didn't belong. It was weird.
And God forbid I bring up LSU sports around them. Or "accidentally" call their school "ULL."
Lafayette is what it is. It's a small city or large town with its local charms and food. The traffic does indeed suck if you don't know how to avoid the major roads, the women are beautiful, and there is a strong sense of Little Brother syndrome whenever BR or NOLA is brought up.

You call that living?

Lafayette folk have no complex or animosity about NOLA. In fact, I'd venture to say citizens of each city probably appreciate the other/have more in common than BR.

FALSE. South of Abbeville did. The city, not so much. Anything North of Highway 14 is high and dry.

This here
If you're moving from Baton Rouge expect a little more "culture shock" that if you're coming from New Orleans

I guess you've never tried to get anywhere on one of Lafayette's only 4 roads at 5 o'clock.
Johnston: cluster frick
Ambassador: Cluster frick
Kaliste Saloom: Cluster frick
Pinhook: Cluster frick
This is correct, however, there are ways around this.
LOL.
OP, where is your office located?

Lived here for ten years.. I've never noticed anyone go out of their way to complain about BR or Nola. The only time I've seen people get in a shite fit about other towns is when someone comes here and wants to point out what sucks, what we don't have, what we should have, what other places have, etc.
I guess that could be interpreted as "not welcome to outsiders". Some people do seem to be unable to let stuff go, however. Instead of ignoring the complainers and enjoying what they have, they want to try and convince people why Lafayette is so great and end up sounding like a whiny little brother.

Like others have said, it is most definitely a town. Always have to explain that to people who try to compare it to other cities.

We play softball there in Youngsville. Hit CB before and after. They do sell beer at the ballpark with some tvs upstairs. Not a bad spot fields are turf as well
Yeah it's real nice and it's not really way out there. Plus that whole area is about to be developed.

Yeah, places like The Lab and Romacelli are cool as hell.
Its nice being able to refer to these as "downstairs"
Also a plus that TR is walking distance

I am very disappointed that diat150 has not spewed off some stupid mma affliction crap in this thread.

Is that fad dying off in Lafayette?

Pretty strong still in Red's last time I lifted there, but damn I love that gym. If I lived in Laffy, I would live pretty close to that place.
