Traffic sucks from 7-8 am and 5-6 pm for sure. However, there's almost always a back way that can save several minutes. You're really only screwed if you have to go down Verot and Pinhook.

Yep, especially in River Ranch, where a lot of people were/are living beyond their means just for the trendy privilege of living there.

Lived in BR, Shreveport, and Lafayette.

Take Lafayette all day over them. They've listed the pros. Traffic isn't that bad, definitely better than BR (but that's not saying much). Just learn your way around and it flows.

BR is meh. Only pro is LSU

Shreve is ok if you only want a family and go to church

Eta: real estate is starting to drop. By April it will be set in pretty low. Good luck

Downtown is great for food, Pop's , but there are too many non downtown options elsewhere for bars for any adult to try to go out downtown.

Pros:
great food
great bar & music scene for a town its size
friendly tight-knit community
lots of activities for families
close proximity to great boating and fishing
less traffic than Baton Rouge, Houston, or New Orleans
Red's gym
Icegators hockey games are fun
far less crime than BR or NOLA

Cons:
downtown is meh
very suburban feel
all of the shopping is in one area
what traffic there is is virtually unavoidable
Soccer Mom city
Public schools are hit or miss

Without a doubt. I'll pass up pinhook and take kaliste saloom. Lafayette traffic isn't great but I'd take it over BR traffic.

oh yeah, absolutely. Corner Bar, Tap Room, just to name a couple. Downtown on weekends has really gone to shite over the past 5-6 years.

In what context?

Downtown Lafayette for food? Very good. It's also great when there's a festival going on.

Pamplona's, Pop's, The French Press, Pat's, Antler's, Johnson's Boucaniere (on the edge of downtown), Don's, Jefferson Street Pub, Legend's, Taco Sisters (right outside on Johnston St), etc.

I have no desire to really go out and do the whole downtown bar hopping thing. Corner Bar and Tap Room are really nice. They have a Corner Bar in Youngsville now, too. There's also Tim and Tia's in RR, I've never been but I know people who like it.

I'm talking about compared to a large city. For a small city, Lafayette's downtown is incredible. There's no high-rises. It's basically all low-rise buildings, mostly restaurants. That's great for a small city, but it's not what most people consider to be a "downtown" feel. It's more like a small town "mainstreet".

only time I'll go is on a random weeknight, like a Monday or so when it's dead.

Yeah, it's not a magnificent sight to behold but there are some cool old buildings downtown and the restaurants are comparable and surpass even much larger cities.

Yeah, Stan owns the Corner Bars and Red's daughter owns Borden's ice cream shop.
