Why are you doing 20 sets on your triceps? It's a supplementary muscle that shouldnt need nearly that amount of volume to be broken down. Even 20 sets on your chest is quite alot. You dont need that much volume to get into shape. To each their own though.

I did (approx) 11 sets on chest yesterday and 8 sets on tri's and was absolutely gassed and pumped. Now, they were all dropsets along with going at a very fast tempo without much rest, but it was still not 20 sets worth of volume.

Yeah I definitely addressed that
His logic was that he wants the muscle to be completely shocked and worn out. He said I honestly shouldn't even be able to complete a session, the high number is there just to keep you going until you're completely drained. I'm skeptical but he's the pro so I'm giving it a try

It would take me 10 days to recover from that and even wipe arse or brush teeth.

What is the meal plan? And what does the workout plan look like for other body parts?

After your chest workout, do a dropset of weighted dips (start with a 45lb plate, or w/e you feel comfortable with). You may only get 4-5 reps, then drop the weight and do dips until you cant do anymore. Then immediately get on the ground and do diamond pushups until you cant do anymore. Then get on the tricep cable extension with lighter weight and do as many reps as you can with strict form. Do two rounds of that with only 2 min break in between. Then do a few sets of dropset dumbbell kickbacks only taking a 1 min break in between (starting with around 30 lbs for example to failure, then drop it to 15 lbs to failure).

Your tri's should be shot from your chest routine so all youre really trying to do is fully break them down and pump as much blood into the muscle as possible. You can do that above tricep routine in less than 10 mins and get out of there, instead of doing 20 isolated sets of something that'll take you 3/4 times as long. Just a thought lol so do what you want.

Edit: Not trying to tell you or your trainer buddy what to do. Im just saying you dont that much volume to get in or stay in good shape. I feel alot of people are at the gym almost twice as long as they have to be to achieve the same or worse results. I think tempo and your mind plays a big role in how your muscles react to a lifting session.

Maybe he wants big triceps. There is nothing wrong with 20 sets of tricep workouts. Some folks do arms 1 day which could consist of 20 tricep sets and 20 biceps sets. There isn't a standard one size fits all workout routine.

It's alright to be skeptical because of the overflow of information you may read or see but you'll be alright with that many sets. If you aren't, tell him and adjust.

No, there's nothing wrong with it. But your triceps can be broken down and pumped in much less volume, especially if youre doing them on chest day.

Of course not, so why not err on the side of conservatism for someone just trying to get back into shape and isnt training like he's 16 weeks out from Olympia? You can also overtrain. Also, there could be a mental block thatll start to creep in around wk 3-4 from doing such an intense routine right out of the gate for someone that hasnt been lifting. "frick, Im really not feeling going in there for 1.5 hrs and do 40 DAMN SETS".

The meal plan's pretty standard. Grilled chicken, vege's, potatoes, eggs, etc. Unfortunately there's no trick or quick fix to eating healthy.

Shot. Burnt. Worn down. Exasperated. Choose whatever word you like, but they are activated in every single isolation chest lift you do.

Less than 12 mins? Is that better? Do we have to break it down?

Weighted dip drop set should take approx 2 mins. Rest 1 min. Weight dip drop set no.2 for another 2 mins. (that's 5) Rest 1 min and walk to dumbbell rack. Kickbacks with heavy dumbbells on each arm and dropset into lighter weight should take <2 mins. Rest 1 min. Another dropset. Walk out the gym.

Discussion should have ended there. A big problem in the fitness world is that other folks who like to workout but have no credentials tend to critique other people's workout routines based on anecdotal evidence. The guy hasn't even started his workout yet and you critiqued what his personal trainer suggested he do. You have no idea what this guy's results will be, which besides his 20 sets, eating and sleeping is more important than your critique. I don't mean to disrespect you and I don't know your background but this is something that grinds my gears.
