Wow. How can anyone be expected to teach and learn in that environment? How depressing.
I do feel sorry for the students.
They are zoned for a school district where no decent teachers want to teach and a city with politicians that don't give a crap about their well being so they tend to fail at higher rates. I bet a lot of these kids could do very well in a better district out in the suburbs.
Public education stopped being about the children a long time ago.

i agree
the issue is what we can/will do about it
even talking about it in real terms is treacherous territory today

I can only speak for myself, but there's no way I could be motivated to give a shite about school or learning anything if that's my visual everyday. There's fricking mushrooms growing out of the walls!

Completely unacceptable. No child should have to go to a school like that. Those pictures infuriate me.
Posted on 1/18/16 at 9:49 am to GetCocky11
Those pictures honestly do not look that much worse than the rural public school that I went to
seriously

When you develop a love for learning, there's opportunity around every corner.
You see mushrooms growing out of walls, I see a teachable moment for science class.

You couldn't pay me enough to teach in a Detroit public school

I feel bad for the kids having to live a world their parents and public leaders created.

so after years of neglect, it's now the Republican governor's fault

That person isn't me.
I don't have the slightest clue how you make someone who doesn't care about their child care about their child. Having a child, in theory, should be enough to make you want to do everything you can to give him/her opportunities in life. If you don't care, I don't see how someone can talk you into it. So yea, no clue how we turn the epidemic around.

I wonder how active and strong the PTA is in that district?

the answer is rewarding and valuing good cultural values and marginalizing and criticizing bad cultural values
this post-modern view that people are born as a blank slate and cultures are equal is the antithesis of what i said

I don't have the slightest clue how you make someone who doesn't care about their child care about their child.
now that is difficult, but if we marginalize the views that are so toxic in these relationships, it may help
having ignorant, uneducated people set in their ways act like they are on the same ground as successful people is just unworkable

the biggest problem is that a big reason why they create such a toxic situation is what i spoke of above
these people fully think they are right and people like you and me (and our values) are wrong

I would convert the entire city into a truck nut manufacturing hub.
I'd have unemployment at 0%, crime down, and truancy would virtually disappear overnight with a renewed interest in truck nut design, manufacturing, and marketing.

Bad business model with the oil and gas field in its current state. Baws can't afford truck nuts like they used to.
