2 year contract expired and I inquired about a new phone.

My options are:

A) Keep using my phone, it's on it's last leg, and continue to pay for my plan as usual.

B) Jump on the next plan and pay $25 extra on top of my bill for the next 30 months, that's 2 1/2 years, if I want a new phone.

That's it, no other options.

So T-Mobile, Sprint? Who's at least giving kisses before they get to screwing?

There's undeniable implied or explicit collusion between the big carriers. They are all fricking us now.

Heard about this last week. I just told myself whatever the second newest phone that is out will be my choice. Once the new phone comes out the others drop to $99 or so

You should get a reduction in your monthly service fee.

Bottom line is the carriers don't want to subsidize handsets anymore. Offerings like straight talk are being copied by the carriers.

This will create pricing pressure on the manufacturers which is a good thing down the road.

Buy a used phone on gazelle.com. If you don't constantly swap phones, it's probably cheaper in the long run.

I threw my phone last night and busted it like a dumbfrick, but was able to use my ipad eligibility for a new upgrade today.

Yeah its dumb, I think i'm paying like $35 extra a month now, BUT apparently my actual bill is going to be reduced by $15-20.

Per the apple store, they are shifting to where they lower your bill, but you essentially pay full price for your phone. Basically shifting the price structure.

You can buy a new phone somewhere else and use it. New iPhones on ebay start at around $800. Or, you could pay $30/month to AT&T on the Next Plan and pay the exact same amount as the out of pocket expense.

Amazing how people go full retard not understanding the next plan.

We have had numerous threads showing why it essentially comes out the same and it allows people that like to upgrade to do so much more often.

C) Buy a phone, new or used, literally anywhere else that sells GSM phones.

D) go with option C and then switch to Straight Talk with an AT&T SIM.

I think Verizon is doing the same thing, but honestly it ends up being cheaper than a 2 year contract for myself.

Have my wife and I on the edge up shite, but we also have her sister on her 2 year contract. She got a deal with a free phone with 2 gigs of data for like $75. We switched her off that, we have like 12 gigs of data to share and with edge up for iPhones, we save like $20 a month had we all been on the 2 year contract with only 2 gigs. It's not a lot but more data and new phones sooner and save a little in the process is a win for me.

Unless something has changed, they give you a credit of $25 for each line that is on Next. I assume the $25 you mentioned is the monthly 0% financing of the new phone? I figure those cancel each other out. Some still offer the cheap upfront phone, but you lose the $25 credit.

I figure it all comes out in the wash really, kinda like choosing between 0% interest or a rebate on a new car.

If you use the next plan it is $40 for unlimited talk and text per month. If have mobile share then it is $25 per phone (save $15 per month for each phone). It was $30 for the data package I chose.

If compare the Next vs contract the price is about the same per month. Here is the rub.....

Let's say you get a new phone that will cost you $25 per month and your total bill is $100. On the next plan when you pay off your phone that cost disappears so your bill goes down to $75.

On a contract when you pay off your phone your bill remains the same because it is built into the price. So it will remain $100 forever if you don't change it.

it is cheaper for a contract short term (money up front) but more expensive if you forget to check up on your account when the contract is over.

Cellular service is a massive rip-off, just like long distance service used to be.

Most of us spend most of our time connected to wifi, but get billed as if we are on cellular 24/7.

buy a used Galaxy S5 OR S6 on Craigslist, go to Walmart and buy Straight Talk BYOP for $60 and that includes sim cards and a month of service.

Pay under $50 a month for 5 gigs of 4g data and unlimited everything else.

Set up autopay online and you'll regret not doing it sooner.
BTW,Straight talk uses AT&T towers.

Buy a new phone outright from Best Buy and stick with your old plan.

Go to Swappa.com or one of those sites, get a mint condition used phone for half the price, and stick your SIM card in it.

I have Verizon. Currently I pay $60 a month for unlimited voice/talk and 1GB of data on a traditional plan. I have a Droid Turbo that I paid $150 for last April.

With Verizon's newer plan I'd pay $50 a month for the plan ($30 data, $20 talk) plus the fee for the phone for 24 months. A Droid Turbo 2 is $21.83/month for 24 months.

Single line on old Verizon plan: $1590 for 24 months
Single line on new Verizon plan: $1724 for 24 months

That is not a savings. I'd have to keep the old phone for 14 additional months at $10 savings per month before I'd be better off. 3 years is a long time to keep a phone.

I know it sounds like it sucks, but I used to do marketing consulting for Alltel (before they were bought by Verizon). Internally, this is how the carriers have always looked at pricing.

You will probably end up being about the same if you calculate it out.
