In 20yrs of marriage, 18 were with a dog or 2. Now, none (RIP Sparky and Lulu).

Curious what OT canine experts are thinking...
(well, most of you)

It depends entirely on you, your living situation, and your personality. I personally like boxers. It's the dog I grew up with. They are protective, loyal, and I like their athletic aesthetic. I would have to have a place with a large yard to get one though because they are very high energy dogs.

I am open to other suggestions, but I've never encountered a golden retriever I didn't like.

They're probably the surest bet for a good all around dog IMO.

Toy poodle. No shedding. Very smart. Easily trained. Decent guard dogs(seriously)

Depends. Young kids, get some kind of shepherd or sheepdog. They will literally herd your kids and watch over them.

Labs and Golden Retrievers are also great.

I like larger dogs like the Saint Bernard, mastiffs specifically spanish, rotweilers, and great danes!

I'm very biased, but whippets/mixes are fricking awesome

they are basically couch potatoes until you take them outside and let them run and then they are basically the fastest dog in existence.

Very sensitive and easy to train, eager to please

We have had beagles our whole marriage. They are great. They aren't needy and they are great with kids.

Poodles are great dogs.

I would also suggest a Standard Schnauzer.

I love great danes but like similar big arse dogs, too many health problems for me. Also, shorter life spans
