I got into a discussion earlier and when I said this is the way my father raised me and how I raise my kids, the person was dumbfounded. They asked why couldn't I let "kids be kids".

I told them my first "toy" gun was a bb gun when I was about 5. Day 1 my dad sat me down and went over the rules.

Am I off base here? My dad would whip my arse for pointing even a fake gun at a friend, dog or horse when I was little.

I mean, we used to have BB gun wars and stuff, but other than that, I have always felt extremely uncomfortable pointing a gun at someone. If my parents saw that happen, no more pew pew

When I was a kid, we played cops and robbers, cowboys and Indians. None of us got shot or grew up to be dangerous members of society or terrorists. My own grandsons play with nerf guns with the other kids. Yeah, I let em shoot at each other with nerf guns outside in the yard and they know the difference between real guns and nerf guns. They also know they can't take any kind of toy gun or resemblance to school. Too many parents in this country have become yankeefied and don't have any common sense. I don't think you are off base.

No kids yet, but i absolutely would not let me imaginary kids point their BB gun at a person or dog.

If it didnt actually shoot objects, i probably wouldnt care much either way.

Nerf toys are meant to shoot at people.

A BB gun is not a toy gun. Nerf gun and water guns are. Teach them the difference. Best lesson is to show them what a real gun does compared to a toy.

Same here. Bad habits are hard to break. We did have some serious BB gun wars growing up. My Dad would have whooped my arse every time he saw me for a week straight. If he only knew the dumb shite we did growning up.

I was this way with the first one. Guns are everywhere in my family. Pistols in glove boxes in trucks and on buggies. Long guns leaned up in corners behind doors. Before he was old enough to know on his own a real gun vs fake gun he just knew you don't point any gun at something else alive

By the second kid, the oldest was running around with so many nerf guns and airsofts it was a little easier to get him to understand toy gun vs adult guns

My kids were taught the toy guns were toys. We all played Cowboys and Indians, cops and robbers, etc. then when about 8 years old they got a BB gun and were taught the rules of firearms/weapons. So, yes on the toy guns.

I teach my kids the same thing. Don't point guns at people. Not even if its a toy gun.

They talked me into getting them air soft guns...when i found out they were shooting at each other w the airsoft guns...i smashed them w a hammer. I'm not going to let one of them 'take an eye out'.

We hunt ducks, doves, deer. I believe guns are to hunt with & to protect yourself & family. Dont point a gun at another person unless you intend to shoot them in self defense.

I work in an ER. I've seen many people with self inflicted wounds when cleaning an alledgedly unloaded gun. That's why i teach my kids...always treat a gun as if it were loaded.

My kid has air soft guns. He has been taught from the first day how to handle it and to treat it as a real gun. My main reason for getting it for him was to teach him gun safety.

I bought the girl's these cool water guns from England that come with a vest that turns red as it gets hit. I get it and it has "NOT FOR CHILDREN" in big letters on it.

I remember being like five and having a water gun that was battery powered that looked like an UZI. No orange on the barrel either.
I had a BB gun at a young age too, and was killing neighborhood squirrels and eight or nine.

water pistol game

My first "gun" (note the Kay Bee toys tag, lol)

This actually came up for me over the Holiday, as I bought my son his first BB gun. I basically told him if he showed he could behave properly with it, then we'd talk about getting him a gun for hunting. That means following all the rules of the gun as if it was a real gun (proper use of safety, safe carry while walking the woods, proper stowage in the house, etc...)

That being said, once he is old enough to have a real gun and has demonstrated that he knows what the heck he's doing, then the BB gun rules will probably ease up. I mean.. who doesn't love shooting their brother in the arse with a BB gun?

NERF guns are totally different, though they actually don't feel good if you get shot in the face with them. That being said, they can shoot the crap out of each with them as far as I'm concerned.
