Remember exactly where I was when I heard. Senior year in high school (frick...) and I was walking between the football stadium and main school building at Hahnville High and my baseball coach who I was close with, Steven Weber (who was the principal at Destrehan for a long while..may still be for all I know) walked up and told me the news.

Strange thing to remember that vividly given I have no real memories of seeing Pistol play live...

I'm trying to wrap my mind around the fact that, if he had lived, Pistol Pete would be pushing 70.

RIP - greatest NCAA backcourt player of all time - period.

I know the guy that was the other starting guard at Pete's high school (Broughton High in Raleigh). He tells a story about their coach's instructions....Billy, when the other team scores, you get the ball and throw it in to Pete.

I remember exactly where I was when I heard the news. That was from Howard Cosell, of all people, who began his radio spot by declaring that a sports giant had died.... I somehow KNEW he was going to say Pete Maravich, who really hadn't been publicly sick. Utter dismay at the news because he was, of course, a contemporary hero of mine.

What other player could make opponents' fans stand up and give a standing ovation during play? NO other player, that's who.

Farewell Pistol. Maybe he'll be with some of the guys against Kentucky tonight.

I came back from four years in the USFA - last year inside the ARTIC CIRCLE ! ! ! - I came back to LSU the the same time the Pistol did & saw every one of his home games. Many times he would throw a no look pass to one or his team mates & if they weren't paying close attension he'd hit'm in the head ! ! !

I saw Pete in the Cow Palace in 1969 when I was in high school. I saw him again when I went to LSU. You had to see him to appreciate what he could do. He averaged over 40 points a game each year he played - think about what kind of scoring that requires. His ballhandling and passing were the best parts of his game. Had he been on the right team in the NBA he could have set assist records that would never be broken. He was one of a kind.

Doesn't seem so long ago, but then many things don't these days.

44 points per game over 3 years without the 3-point shot. Averaged 40 plus as a freshman. Dale Brown charted all of his shots in college and estimated he averaged 13 3-pointers per game. So, 57 points per game average potentially. Yes, maybe defenders step out if he's taking a 3, but do you remember how well he could drive and shoot free throws (30 for 31 in 1 game). You come out on Pete and he drives right past you, so. 69 against Alabama and 68 against Walt Frazier and the Knicks, AND fouled out of that game on a bogus offensive foul with time left in the game.
