My favorite Gerber filet knife has lost its edge and I need to get it back. I have a stone but looking for a better way. TIA

I use the Lansky system and always come out with a very sharp blade. I use it on my wife's kitchen knives as well and she thinks it's great.

A buddy of mine used this to sharpen our bucket of skining knives. They are insanely sharp. And I use medical grade scalpels daily and was still impressed by the sharpness this had on even the cheapest blades.

Any of y'all know of a good steel? My chef/butchering knives are looking rough.

I like Gerber. Never been upset with what i get for the price.
Whenever I say this around my friends who know a whole hell of a lot more about it than I know they laugh and say "if it ain't German or Japanese, than it ain't shite"
Don't really understand what that means but plan on finding out.

Lansky Deluxe kit will do everything you need. If you want to get crazy with it you can pick up the sapphire stone and leather attachments.
Wicked Edge is a similar system but much better and more user friendly but you can buy 15 Lanskys for the price.

Buy a cheap belt sander with fine grit and leather strapping belts. It will sharpen any thing to a razors edge.

I got the WorkSharp Ken Onion edition for Christmas. That thing is awesome. I've sharpened kitchen knives, filet knives, pairing knives, skinning knives, dozens of pairs of scissors, and a big Ole rusty machete. It's stupid easy to use and has a ton of applications. The stuff I've sharpened has been everything from Japanese stainless, to German to carbon steel and it eats it all. It's impressive.
It can also be used on axes, lawn mower blades, shovels, pretty much anything you want to put an edge on. I highly recommend it.
Having had no real sharpening experience I was skeptical, but this tool makes it easy for anyone to use and it does a fantastic job. I took a knife my older brother found rusted to hell in the woods some 30 years ago and put a mirror finish on the edge in all of 5 minutes.

Another vote for a worksharp.
I have a couple friends who work commercial kitchens and its what they use.

The Worksharp is easy and fool proof.

I'll add this thought:
If you want to learn to sharpen knives, something like the Lansky system is great.
If you don't care about the process and just want sharp knives, get the WorkSharp. You really gain no knowledge or skill from it, but you end up with crazy sharp stuff. Just depends on what you're looking for.

Dad got the worksharp for his birthday this year. He brought it over and was like a kid in a candy store sharpening everything I own. I was very impressed with the results. I even let him do the blades on a couple of hand planes and after he was done they were slicing through some very hard Padauk like butter.
He got me one for Christmas but I haven't gotten to play with it yet.
