My Mercedes-Benz requires high octane gas. When I asked my mechanic about it, he said I could try a lower octane but it would probably cause knocking so I stick with the higher octane. He did tell me to always use name brand gas--Exxon, Shell, etc.-- and to never use the off brand gas like at Murphy's, Racetrack because the name brands have better detergents and additives in them and are cleaner.

I'd change mechanics.

Unless your MB is really old, you won't hear knocking from a lower octane. The computer will retard the engine's ttiming to compensate for the lower octane resulting in a loss of power (~5%). Additionally, you will see a very minor loss of MPG. Lastly, doing this for very long (running lower than recommend octane) will cause premature failure of the coil packs and catalytic converter(s).

Only run lower octane in an emergency.

I believe you. My wife has a Mazda 3 so I was searching the Edmunds list and came across the recommendations for the Miata. I had to chuckle to see the premium fuel recommendation for the Miata, the Ford Transit Van, and the Jeep Renegade, although I understand the recommendation is based on the fact that they have turbo engines and/or advanced fuel injection systems.

It sure seems silly that a 2016 Ford Transit Van needs to run the same fuel as a 2016 BMW M6 or a Dodge Viper.

ETA: The Mazda USA website recommends 91 Octane for the Miata, but it says the minimum octane rating is 87. I'm surprised the car had such an issue with the 87 octane in your experience.

They probably have the timing upped a bit in factory tune.

No doubt knocking is a real thing, not too much with newer stuff.

Then you don't have a premium vehicle, or a truck for that matter.

When auto gas got to $4 a gallon, 100LL avgas was close to $7, I read recently that at some airports it is down to around $3.50

It's certainly a real thing at 30psi boost when the water injection solenoid decides to go out.
