When did plant operators start moving anything heavier that a coffee cup?

Ummmm yes six figures is a big deal. If everyone on the OT weren't making 250k, 6'3 235lbs with an OT 10 as a wife and benching 315 for 20 then it would be a bigger deal.

Just to give some clarification on hours worked:
I am an operator working the EEWO shift.
Now every plant is different but here is an example of mine.

I have a 28 day rotation in a month. I work 14 days out a month 12 hour shifts rotating days and nights.

The way our pay periods work is I will have 168 hours a month if I don't pick up any OT shifts.

168 x 12 = 2,016 hours worked in a year
YTD I have picked up an additional 200 hours of OT. So roughly 2,216 hours worked this year.

Some guys work 700hrs some 50hrs just depends on the person.

Versus a normal 5 day 40 hr a week = 200hrs/month
= 2,400 hours a year

So even picking up an additional 200 hrs OT I still work less than a normal 9-5er.

I understand this doesn't take into account vacation and PTO and holidays.

This is just a rough example of how my particular plant schedule works.

I could never work a 9-5 job. I love being off during the week to fish, hunt, and play golf. I do miss a lot of different events with friends and family, but that's the sacrifice I have chosen to provide for my family.

its a fine job, but youd have to pay me a lot more to do it, however.

the 100k income that comes along with that job is certainly not brag worthy considering the health, social, family, and personal sacrifices one has to make to have it.

See my post above... I stated that I chose to make those sacrifices to provide for my family. Not all operators are douche bag money gloating baws. Some are just guys out there keeping their head down working to provide for wife and kids.

They rarely miss anything now days. They do so many shift swaps that you forget what shift they permanently work on.

You do know 50% of operators, all maintenance, all e&i are all hourly, didn't go to college, and make more than engineers right?

I work the same shift at a plant in swla that is 20 minutes from my home. I love having weekdays off and also a stretch of 7 off in a row to do whatever I want. I am also young and single so that may make a difference one day. The pay is good and I am union so the whole lay off thing doesn't worry me.

It's the chemical side. They are probably killing it with these oil prices
this, Natgas below two bucks a 1000 - Shell chemical and all the chem plants are making $$$$ - chem plant operators not the same as oilfield workers - when it comes to job security. Don't know about the trash and truck nuts shite - however, do know about the price of Nat gas.

I don't think people here realize the difference between an offshore production operator and a Process Operator/Technician.

They're completely different but they do make similar money.

Offshore operators usually work a 7-7 or 14-14 schedule meaning 14 days stuck offshore working 12 hours a day and 14 days at home doing nothing or 7 on and 7 at home.

Process Operators work in oil refineries or chemical plants and it's much harder to get hired on without at least a 2-year Industrial Technology Degree. Most Process Operators work a DuPont schedule where they end up working 14 12-hour shifts a month spread out evenly except for a full 7 day off period once a month and also go home every night.

This "they are always at work and don't have any time for their family" stuff is complete BS.

And if you live anywhere near a chemical plant or refinery trust me when I say you should be glad the pay is high enough to make smart and dedicated people want to work there. You don't want a dumbass blowing up a Cat Cracking unit or losing containment of a volatile substance and putting everyone in the vicinity in danger.

If it makes you feel any better, 50% of them will get married, buy too big of a house and too nice of a car, and end up having to claim every hour of overtime possible. If your friend is that douchey about money talk, he's probably in the 50%.

He does realize also they are hiring 17 Ptechs and im sure they are gonna have 500+ applications easy. Unless his daddy is the CEO of Shell, the odds are not in his favor.
