Do you not realize this whole Miles circus is national?

Do you not realize the whole LSU is bankrupt BS went national as well?

I guess it was then ok to piss off the boosters who put up the money for the Nutrition Center for Athletes, and then spit on the boosters who put up the money to buy out Miles.
Sounds like a great strategy to me.

Most of you rantards do not understand what Alexander was saying. Yes, he was powerless. He was basically saying that he was told by the politicians probably both Jindal and Edwards that if they were willing to spend that kind of money, albeit private, to get rid of a coach who has consistently won, that if he wanted ANY additional funds, he was going to have to do a lot of fundraising to make up the shortfall and he would have to do it year in and year out until oil prices started to hover around $95.00 a barrel for a prolonged period of time.

You guys should get up, get dressed and get out into the real world and see how things that require real money work in the real world. You gotta dance for your supper. Sure you can get 25 million from boosters and get yourself a new coach....go ahead , knock your lights out, hey at least it is not going to come from the taxpayer. While you are at it see if those same boosters will give at least that amount this year and next for academics?

If that happened, then the politicians are stupid too. I guess that's the penalty for living in a state ranked so low in education.

Agree or disagree with how the money is spent all you want.

The president is just a fricking idiot for basically coming out and saying Les is only still in place for reasons that are purely political. How do you think that's going to go over on the recruiting trail? I'm at a loss the powers that be could be this fricking inept and allow that interview to go out. The only person that interview helped was probably Alleva.

How about LSU cuts its cost to get their expenses in line with their revenues? How did it get to the point that LSU is in a budget crisis? What expenses have spiraled out of control?

Probably so that Alexander and his ilk could highlight the fact that the budget crisis for academics will keep the athletics hostage until its gets its way.

Because Jindal made massive cuts in state funding for higher ed?

quote:

When Gov. Bobby Jindal took office in 2008, the state funded 58 percent of the LSU’s overall budget. Today the number decreased by nearly 33 percent, a loss of $145.7 million.

To make up for the loss in state funding, the University raised tuition and fees from 42 percent of the total budget in 2008 to 74 percent of the total budget this year.

The primary athletic programs (ie football at LSU, basketball at Kentucky) have become powerful marketing arms for the universities in a highly competitive atmosphere for students. The academics myopically view this as the tail wagging the dog, unless those programs get out of control (ie the U and Free Shoes University back in the day). A good administrator will understand this by taking advantage of athletics to maximize academics while keeping athletics between the ditches from behind the scenes. If reports are true, the King screwed the pooch by not getting his ducks in a row with Alleva earlier to transition Miles out if things went south. The seeds of discontent with Miles started with 1/9/12, and did not improve. Obviously it starts at the top and King and Alleva are at cross purposes to the detriment of the university in athletics AND, ironically, academics.

But you admitted the money was there to do it, you just didn't want to spend it because you believe the state is full of Neanderthals that can't be explained the difference between private and public money.

So the legislature can still ask why is your athletic department able to raise these funds but your here with your hat in hand claiming to be on the brink of bankruptcy? Maybe you should be doing your job better instead of using scare tactics.

Again the guy should have just continued to be the man people speculated nixed the deal. Now all the arrows are coming right at you.

Just an all around disaster

Besides lay off nearly 2000 employees and terminate/consolidate 60 programs?

quote:

Impact from FY 2008-09 to FY 2014-15 Budget Cuts
Exclusive of hospitals, loss of 1,924 employees (12.2%) or 1,810 FTEs (13.3%)
Faculty - 363 employees (7.9%) or 295 FTE (7.7%)
All other staff – 1,561 employees (14.0%) or 1,515 FTE (15.6%)
Between FY 2010 and FY 2013, the System has terminated or consolidated approximately 60 programs
LSU A&M – 18
LSU S – 18
LSU HSC NO – 13
LSU HSC S – 6
LSU A – 2
LSU E – 2

I actually supported Mike Foster and Jindal (early on) because they seemed to understand the value of higher education (ergo the TOPS program).

When in reality Bobby Jindal has been the absolute worst thing to ever happen to LSU and higher education in Louisiana.

Turns out Bobby Jindal is the exact opposite of Huey Long.

Chicken, I thought you were a Hillary fan?

Thank God LSU has some big time boosters that care about more than the toss dive.

Phyllis Taylor gave 15 million for the engineering building. Same it cost to pay one of the most successful coaches in school history not to coach.

Chicken, you are on the wrong course with this argument.
Higher education is in a financial crisis nationwide.
Conservative politics on the state level is prt, but only part of the problem.
We're paddling upstream in La. On this and there are LOTS of streams converging against us.
King is not helping and seems to be ill equipped to handle the crisis, but it is not easy to be in higher ed in these times...

Yeah, it's hard not to empathize with King here.

At least the new governor will in theory be friendlier to LSU because he won't come in with the dogma that tax cuts are always awesome.

LSU had a budget crunch when Edwin was governor back in the 90s but it was child's play compared to what Jindal has done.

what exactly is the goal of higher education? And why does higher education need a bloated budget to meet that objective?

Good lord please tell me you don't equate these as being the same and have anything to do with each other? Let me compare some watermelons and potatoes of your and tell you how one is not like the other?

Agreed on Jindal.

Sold LSU and the state out to maintain a platform piece for his future campaign.

Really all of our legislators are too chicken shite to cut the fat from the necessary areas of higher education here.
