How can Navy build a good football team but not Army?

Do they not have the same service requirements? Is it easier to get into the Naval Academy than West Point?
Maybe this is a dumb question but I'm just kind of curious.

My assumption coming out of high school is that if I joined Navy there was less of a chance I was going directly to Iraq or Afghanistan to fight the Saudi Hijackers. I would have chosen Navy but I could have been wrong.

A quick google search reveals the following:
- West Point is a Slightly Larger School: (4,591 vs. 4,526 Total Students)
- Navy is Slightly More Difficult to Get In: (7.4% vs. 9.0% Acceptance Rate)

It probably comes down to some of the better guys would prefer to be pilots or shipboard for their service versus grunts. The entrance requirements for all the academies is the same I believe.
And Navy's dress uniforms are much cooler

I think Navy is harder to get into.

Id assume less chance of ground combat plus a offense that just works better with smaller guys

I'll give you the same answer that I give whenever people ask why certain tradition-rich programs are struggling: Coaching.

Army also runs the triple option right?
Posted on 11/27/15 at 11:21 am to hendersonshands
The Army usually takes 3-4 times the casualties the navy takes
to be fair, the Naval Academy also feeds into the marines i believe.

You can't start trash talking until game week.
This is poor form.

I know for a while they didn't run triple option, I thought about it after my post though that they might have switched to it lately.
Navy has been committed to the option for longer.

I'm not trash talking. I usually root for Army when they play but I'm a daggum American so I'm just curious.

Paul Johnson and the current coach implemented a system and have stuck with it.
Air Force has been good.
Army is the outlier. They need to find a system and stick to it.

West Point's honor code is a lot harder to live by, but does qualify you to be governor easier than Navy's.
Seriously though, I've wondered the same thing. Air Force even fields some teams that win bowls every couple of years, appears to just be Army that struggles out of the three.

They hired Jeff Monken who was the Ga. Southern coach whoe beat Florida with triple option, so perhaps it could work there.
As much as I support Navy/AFA more, I'd love to see all 3 service academies be competitive at the same time.

Much less military rigor, discipline and more room at Navy.

Was it 2012 when Army was driving to beat Navy and Trent Steelman fumbled inside the 10 or whatever? The NBC cameras kept showing him sitting on the bench, devastated. It was awful, I felt so bad for that guy.

Damn army has two weeks off for navy. That seems odd

Youth being indoctrinated by An Officer and a Gentleman repeats on AMC.

If you think about it, the service academies are the best places to be a head coach outside of the elite Power 5 schools and Notre Dame. The kids are very disciplined so you don't have to deal with any outside shenanigans. They are much more patient with their head coaches. Troy Calhoun has been at Air Force for almost a decade. Same thing with Ken Niumatalolo at Navy. If Coach Ken has a couple losing seasons, nobody is going to be calling for his head because Navy know he's a great coach who's done a lot for their program. Plus if you win the Commander-in-Chief trophy, you get to go to the White House and meet the President. I know a lot of people here don't like Obama but everybody has to admit it would be a pretty cool experience to get to meet the President and chill in the White House for a couple hours. I would much rather coach at Army or Navy or Air Force than a place like Iowa State or Wake Forest.
