There is a metal file you can get at Sally's beauty shop that has a shepards hook on one end and a triangular file on the other.LINK Buy it. Then buy some dermoplast at a pharmacy. Get some topical triple antibiotic ointment on it twice per day till it starts to heal a bit(if it doesn't, see a doctor), spray the Dermoplast on it and wait 5 minutes. Once it's numb or sort of numb, get the file and use the sort of triangular end to file the side of the problem nail. Once the offending portion of the nail is gone keep applying the antibiotic and it should get better. Or, just see a podiatrist and knock it out quickly.

I used to use an exacto, but Walmart sells a cool little kit that works too.

Jam some cotton under it to pull it up. It will feel better in the morning.

Seriously go to a podiatrist. DON'T go to a regular doctor as I learned this lesson painfully. Go to a podiatrist. It was the best thing I could have done for mine. He will cut them out and kill the root. You will never get another one again.
Correct answer.

They make these cutters for them that look like a cross between a hole punch and snips. Cut the ingrown part out with those

I had a terrible one when I was younger. I was at an orthopedist for a broken wrist and mentioned it to him. Next thing I know, he stuck a BALL POINT PEN down the side of my clearly infected toe. I think it was the worst pain I have experienced in my life.

I got a few handled by other doctors later in life and I make them numb my toe enough to where I cannot feel it. I am scarred from the ballpoint pen experience.

Oh trust me, you know.

ETA: Don't mess around with these. It's surprising how something like a little toe can radiate pain through you...

I had one once. Bottle of whiskey, pain pills, clippers, and a sharp knife.

Slice and clip the skin away until you can pull the nail up and out and then trim it down.

I used to do this and it worked out fine. Pry back the corner of the nail that is digging into the skin until the pus comes out, wash the toe, pry back again and shoot some neosporin in there, and then pack with cotton. Change out the cotton and salve every day for two or three days while the nail grows and corrects itself.

Go to a podiatrist if it doesn't get better with Epsom salt and hot water. If you try to cut it out yourself you're either going to get an infection or not get the whole thing out and have to go eventually anyway. The podiatrist will kill the nail bed so it won't grow back. Ive had to have it done multiple times on both feet because my nails are indestructible.

Trim it and use this to get the skin from around it and file the corner. It'll feel better in a day or two

Most "regular doctors" do it this way, too. I do, at least.

That's good to hear. The time I had one cut out by a "general practitioner" was a horrible experience for me. It has been a while though.

He injected the toe to deaden it (with a ton of lidocaine I think) but he seemed to miss the mark on exact locations. It was only numb on the surface. I felt everything and he didn't use the acid to kill the root either. I think that he knew he messed up as he gave me a prescription for pain. Additionally I was sore for a few days and had to miss work.

After that I started going to a podiatrist and the process was very much painless with the exception of the injection for anesthesia. The toe was completely numb for every procedure. I never needed pain meds and returned to work the following day every time.

Digital blocks are very easy to do. Lidocaine is the standard medication. When I, or any other doctor for that matter, perform procedures on people in clinic, I don't feel a thing. Never once have I cut something off of someone and it hurt me. You have to speak up if it's not dead. Lidocaine is cheap and easy to add more of. No one has ever been too numb. Plenty have been not numb enough. There's just no good way of us knowing how numb you are.

Of course, he could've sucked at doing blocks.

Acid is just one way, and even it fails. There are some other ways of doing this. They all have failure rates and won't necessarily work the first time around. What he really should have done is asked you whether you wanted the nail back or not. Many patients DO want their nail back, so we DON'T always destroy it.

Glad to hear that your future experience was better, though. Not much is worse than bad medicine.
