could live with finishing second more than a few games a year. Curry at Bama

And who did they hire after? And after that? Bama may hate losing as you say but they suck at hiring coaches. Saban fell in their laps. They had nothing big to do in that hire but shake their heads in amazement at their luck. Don't make that program out to be any more than they are- 1 lucky hire away from being simply a has-been with great old Bear stories.

Absolutely agree with you. They shite the bed hiring coaches after Curry and prob made a mistake firing him, but it doesn't change the fact that they made an effort for excellence. We, at this time, have decided that mediocrity is acceptable.

EXCELLENT first response... that was the one I came to post when I saw the topic.

Dude was 9-2 (regular season) and fired BEFORE the bowl game because he was deemed not good enough to follow the Osborne legend.

Yes. Amazing winning record, no losing seasons in 13 years.

Could not beat Michigan...

Listen. I'm off the Les train after Sat. We just seem lost. But at the same time we aren't mediocre. 2-4 loss seasons are good. It's just that I think most would agree we've trended toward under-achieving given everything at our disposal. Not sure Less had the ability to change this far into his coaching span.

And they're still looking. A demand for excellence is fine, but a coaching search is always dicey. Timing and blind luck play so much of a part. When Miles goes- no matter when that is- it won't nearly be as some fans think- that we can just snap our fingers and the best will line up. It just doesn't happen that way very often regardless of the school. Ask USC, Texas, Nebraska, Miami, Tennessee.... Heck ask Bama how many times they blew it until Saban fell in their laps.

Tommy Bowden was basically forced out after never having a losing season at Clemson. I think they were invited to 9 straight bowls, but his records weren't that good (lots of 4-5 loss seasons). He resigned during the middle of his last season at 3-3. He didn't even have a losing season at Tulane.

While we're talking about Bowdens, Terry Bowden never had a full losing season at Auburn either. He was forced out while they were 1-5 in his last season. They won the SEC West and almost won the SECCG the year before.

As for Pelini, that dude got two unsportsmanlike penalties in like 30 seconds on his team's last drive while they were in position to possibly win the game this weekend. He's nuts.

Couldn't agree more. With the exception that 2-4 loss seasons are acceptable.

And Bobby Bowden was forced to retire at Florida State.

So I suppose you could say that all three Bowdens were forced out or fired after never posting a losing season.

Firing a coach that wins a lot but can't (or no longer can) win it all can have disastrous effects.

Seems like at least some of the names listed in this thread a common theme - following up a "legend" or an uber successful coach. A lot of times coaches brought into these situations can't win with a portion of the fan base.

Of course having a coach overstay his welcome can also have bad effects (i.e.: Paterno, Bowden at Fl. State, etc.)

A little different story in the NFL: John Fox, head coach of the Denver Broncos got fired after a 12-4 season last year.

Bo Pelini?

Pelini's seasons at Nebraska:

2008: 9-4
2009: 10-4
2010: 10-4
2011: 9-4
2012: 10-4
2013: 9-4
2014: 9-3 (fired before the bowl game)

ended only one year (2008) without being ranked

Great call

Richt's predecessor at UGA only had one 5-6 season (his first year), then had 4 winning seasons in a row and was fired with a 40-19 record in 5 years.
