Former Ohio St. coach John Cooper (1988-2000) had one losing season--his first in 1988. He was fired in 2000 after going 11-1 (Sugar Bowl), 6-6 and 8-4 his final three seasons.

He was fired largely because of his inability to beat arch rival Michigan--at the time of his firing, OSU had lost something like 5 straight to the Wolverines.

And who did they hire after?

Gene Stallings.

Seems eerily similar.

Then they hire tressel and go on a nice run.

Yep be careful for what you ask for it is harder than you think to keep it going or when you have to turn a program around. Ask Texas, Miami, USC, Florida, Nebraska, Michigan, etc.

Jim Donan. His players were caught juicing and off the field a lot of white nose candy to go along with it (X not coke necessarily)>

coach at Colorado won a natty and a year or two later it was determined he was using sex to recruit.

Some of these do not fit.

Who did USC fire? Pete left for the NFL.
Where was Texas going WITH MACK?
How is UF even on this list? They fired Zook and hired Urban. It's the epitome of thinking big. When Urban fricked them, they went for a high ceiling in Muschamp. When it didn't work out they went for a high ceiling in McElwain, who has already locked up the SECE. UF is literally the opposite of the point you're trying to make.

Nebraska is probably the best example with Solich.

You didn't mention OSU, but they're another example of thinking big. They fired Cooper and since have won NCs with Tressel and Urban.

I think you are conflating two different people.

McCarty won a NC and did not use sex to recruit.

Barnett did not win a NC and did use sex to recruit.

Curry was never accepted by a lot of people at Bama for myriad reasons, but mainly because he had no connection to Paul Bryant. I think he's a decent man and cared about his players but he never was an elite coach. The fact he wasn't popular to begin with, coupled with his inability to beat Auburn, proved to be his undoing. He wasn't exactly fired. He was being pursued by Kentucky and realized there were some people in powerful places who would never have his back so he cut his losses, went to UK, and Bama told him not to let the door hit him in the arse. Gene Stallings was hired and was a definite upgrade. He went 70-16 from 1990-1996 and won a NC in 1992. He left because Bama hired an idiot AD that he couldn't co-exist with. Stallings remains beloved in Tuscaloosa. Mike DuBose took over next and Bama began a slide into a decade of mediocrity highlighted by NCAA sanctions and coaching carousels.

Be careful what you wish for LSU fans....Miles surely needs to make some changes but he has won a LOT of games since 2005. His teams always seem well prepared, the last 2 weeks notwithstanding and 1-9-12. But who knows, LSU put Saban on the map, maybe you'll catch lightning in a bottle twice. Or maybe you'll sink back to the Stovall, Archer, Hallman, DiNardo era.
