Not the one I took. Bunch of safety stuff, then approximately 5 minutes at the range to prove that you can shoot forward

OP should get a Savannah Cat. Basically like having your own ninja.

Im sure it does penetrate more than a lot of the new hollow point handgun loads that expand very aggressively.

It's a trade off though. Just about anybody is going to have a tough time landing hits with a handgun. Buckshot coming out of the backside of a person is going to go through less wall than a 9mm personal defense bullet fresh out of the barrel.

There are endless variables to discuss here. IMO, if I've got to shoot a person at 5 yards in my house in the dark, I'll take my 12 gauge with 1 buck over any handgun that exists on this planet.

I keep a Remington 870 next to the bed. AR15 is right next to it.

My thought process of it was to have when we travel. We do a lot of travel from San Antonio to Baton rouge, and it would be something along the lines of that.

If a dude breaks into your house and sees this Velociraptor-looking muthafricka, he knows he done fricked up.

That's a complex question. Bapple (who has forgotten more about gun issues than I will ever know) will come in and say that birdshot is a no go. However, bird shot (like number 6) will hit like a solid mass of lead at household ranges - 12 to 15 feet at most, right? Yet, it will not rip through interior walls and kill the kids, dog and neighbors. But it is a compromise choice and not without risk.

I think that with buckshot - you're making a choice - fewer, yet larger, projectiles, or more, yet smaller, projectiles. In 12 gauge, 00 is devastating at close range.

None.

I live on a corner lot, so I'm well lit, but still have motion sensor lights.

Alarm system.

Dogs.

What to use for home defense is a tricky question because it can be different things to different people. It's what you feel comfortable using that's best for you. If your ok with a 12 or 20 ga. shotgun, then use it. But if you're a female that's 5'2" and 105 lbs., a 12 or 20 ga. shotgun might not be the weapon you want to use. The main thing is to get something you can use effectively, take it to the range and practice, practice, practice....!!!

I have a couple of 9mm pistols (our CCW weapons)at our bedside but also have a Taurus Judge 5 shot Revolver that shoots 3" .410 shotgun shells and .45 Long Colt. The first shot is a .410 load especially made for home defense and the next 4 are .45 hollow point. Keep in mind that most home invasions and burglaries are at night and fought at close quarters.

Another important thing is to know the law as it pertains to home defense. Don't get arrested because you shot a burglar running away from you, even though, if you're like me, you'd like to.

Again, the main thing is to get something that you're comfortable with and not afraid of using, no matter what it is. If everyone would have a weapon for defense of our homes and family, and use them effectively, we'd have far fewer burglaries and home invasions...!!!

I have a sign on my front door that says "THIS IS NOT A GUN FREE ZONE"... I know I'm going to get a lot of flack on here but this is just my opinion.

I don't think birdshot is a no-go in certain instances, but I've been shot with it before rabbit hunting (accidentally) at about 30 yards and none of it made it through my Carhartt jacket. I image at 30 feet it would be different, but you are giving up LOTS of horsepower vs buckshot. If that had been buckshot I would have probably died.

Things like what clothes the bad guy is wearing matters a lot with birdshot at anything more than point blank.

At least we can all agree that for OP, a 20ga shotgun is the answer.

Same here. Rem 870 next to bed + medium caliber bush rifle.

- Alarm System
- Dog
- Plenty of outdoor motion lighting all-around the house
- Deadbolts
- Handgun (9MM?) and a smaller shotgun with less recoil AND most importantly, take wife and yourself to the range to learn how to use them

True, but that loss scales with range. Of course, I don't want to shoot at an armed, dangerous opponent with birdshot at 50 yards. Buckshot might kill him, as you suggest.

On the other hand, I'm going to have a tough time hitting him with a handgun at that range.

A handgun is a "good enough gun" or a gun that you use to fight your way home or to a real gun (i.e. a rifle or shotgun). But, the portability and convenience make them a viable option in limited circumstances. However, I think it takes a lot more work to become proficient with a handgun.

And we haven't gotten into black rifles yet - the ultimate personal defense weapon out to 300 meters or more.

I bought a mossberg maverick 88 the other day for under 200$.

Put a pistol grip on it.

Shot some high powder shells through it.

I'll be returning the pistol grip.

This.

I would prefer bird shot if I had kids or multiple people in the house. Shooting someone at 15 ft with bird shot is almost like shooting them with a slug.

I think bird shot is the best of both worlds. Knock down power and less over-penetration.
