Is a Big Green Egg really worth all the money and charcoal you have to use to cook

BGE is pricey but it's all you'd ever need. It's an industrial strength grill, a pizza oven and a smoker.
That said, my BGE is at the camp. Too lazy to bring it back. When I smoke at home I use the 40" MasterBuilt electric. If you already have a grill you're happy with, then maybe just adding a smoker will save you some money.
I love the MB electric I have. Simple and easy to use.

I bought a BGE knockoff at Sams Club, Vision Grill for $449. Smoking a beef brisket right now. I've had it for 8 weeks or so, and it works great.

I have a Masteruilt Xtra wide propane and it has been pretty good.Im on my 3rd one.The sheet metal on most commercial smokers is very thin and doesnt hold up to frequent use. I just started building a new smoker that should be the last one I need. Its gonna be a tank but should hold up well.

All the top tier ceramics are very good. They all are similar and they all will last 20+ years. The carcoal is not an issue, it can be purchaed at Walmart. The Primo xl gives you a bigger cooking surface

The BGE is a versatile wonder, like all Kamado style grills, but it is, far and away, not the best smoker you can buy.

I have a primo and love it.
As biggerbear said it is not the best smoker (maybe) but it is the most versatile in my opinion.

Electric is better than any ceramic

Recently bought a BGE myself and it is extremely versatile in what it can cook and methods. I've also been looking at the Rec Rec grills/smokers. The wood pellet option would definitely be on my list.

If there was a KR branded BGE you would be all over it...

Got a pellet grill the other day to try out. It's pretty cool. I love our egg but this thing is significantly easier to smoke with. Just set the temp and walk away. Very little baby sitting involved. Put two pork shoulders on this morning and haven't had to touch it.

Go Masterbuilt electric with the remote and temp probe. Too easy and convenient.

Check out Yoder pellet grills. The 640 is a great smoker and grill. Built like a tank.
I've cooked everything from lobsters to brisket to breakfast. I lot of people talk down about pellet grills saying it isn't authentic grilling. Personally, I can cook fantastic food without having to babysit the fire. I don't care if it's"cheating"... I'm using my Yoder a lot more than I ever did used my stick and/or gas grills. And with much better results.
Make sure to buy the grill grates and the competition frame... Makes it easier to move it around, it weighs quite a lot.

BGE and Primo are great. BGE made in Mexico, Primo made in USA...

Honestly, my oldest and most favorite is a little weber smoker...I can smoke a twenty pound turkey on it and only have to open the thing once to reload charcoal and water...
kind of old fashioned, but I have never found anything that makes a better tasting turkey...

Master built 40" electric smoker. I've had one going on 5 years now and love it. Now they have the phone app that uses Bluetooth so you can monitor the temp from your phone.
