Stick burners are by far an away your best non commercial smokers if you want to work the fire.
Pellet smokers aren't that far behind and are extremely easy to work.
You have a mix of electric and ceramics that are very good.
Something like a masterbuilt electric with an amnps pellet tray producing the smoke is the best bang for the buck. Masterbuilt chip trays are pretty garbage.

Weber Smokey Mountain Smoker 18.5 inch is about $299 and great for low and slow. Can't do high heat for pizzas and such like the egg, but it is the best bang for the buck for smoking,

this is what i have. The good one open range. I did tons or research and this gave me the best of both worlds as a smoker and grill. It is very well made.... one of the things i like the best is there is a damper that will shut the temp down in the cook box to about 100deg.
