When did you know it was time for a second dog?

My current pup is around 9 months old, and she lives in my apartment with me. She gets extremely excited when she gets to my parents house and constantly hangs around/plays with my dad's dog, but gets pretty bummed out when I bring her back to the apartment and she doesn't have my dad's dog around and it's just me to hang out with.

you should probably be a bit more active with your first dog first

I've considered it bc my dog gets lonely during the day, but he's not a big fan of other dogs so I'm not sure it would work out

Ours are a year apart. Don't get a third one.

We've talked about it and want to get a second dog when my current dog is ten, so she can impart her wisdom and great behavior to the new dog. I always get rescue pups.
I got lucky with this one. (in eight years only one mistake in the house and she was locked inside for 14 hours and pooped and peed in the bathtub.
She walks with no leash and has no intention of running away. (if she gets out the gate she goes to the front door)

When you realize that you aren't ever able to have kids.

I can't say I don't sympathize with your dog. I wouldn't want to hand out with you either. But...it's a fricking dog. Do you think it lies awake at night longing for the companionship of another dog?

In general, I will never have just one dog for long. They need buddies too. Maybe if you're single and can spend enough time with your dog. Once you get married and have kids, that is hard to do. I spend time with my 3 dogs every day but I cannot spend 3-4 hours hanging with them.

Goldens seem to like having a companion. Ours is a rescue and sort of alpha, so prob won't get one with him. But for the next round I'd like to get two.

2 is easier than 1. 3 is harder than both.

When my wife fell in love with a puppy she saw.

When my dog dies or is too old to do what I need him to do is when I get a new dog.

When my first dog finally settled down a bit and was a bit more behaved (2 years old for mine). It's worked out pretty well.
