Any of y'all ever eat bluefish?

We were down in St George this past week and this group that were two houses down from us we're keep almost anything they caught.
Fishing really wasn't great but I'm not so sure these people new what they were doing at all. They were call juvy jack crevalle hard tails and some pogies I caught in a cast net they thought they were pompano.
They may have actually tried the pogies not sure but I founds 2 filleted bluefish so I know they at least tried them.
I have never heard of anyone eating bluefish. Anyone tried it?

Had some when I was younger. When bled out properly, and fried with a ton of seasoning, they'll do just fine.

No, but all the crabs I caught when using blues as bait liked 'em.

Yeah, that would have been pretty good.
When they were getting all excited about the "pompano" I was telling them that no, those aren't pompano.
I don't think they paid attention though

They are not good fried or grilled the meat has a very pungent taste.
However I have had it smoked and made into a dip which was surprisingly good.

Serious response - if you filet and skin them AND cut out the blood line and cook them fresh, preferably that day but at most within two days, they are about as good in my view as redfish. Not as good as trout or flounder but decent. NEVER freeze the filets. Fresh filets dipped in milk and seasoned fish fry and then fried are the best preparation method. But if I can catch trout the blues get thrown back.

A guy I used to work with was from N.J., and he used to talk about how they would go fishing and target bluefish. Bring them home and eat them.
He says that the bluefish caught in the Gulf don't taste the same as the bluefish caught up in the northeast.
I don't know if he is right or not, because I have never eaten bluefish.

Really? Never? It's not uncommon. They're decent fried.

My brother got married on the Jersey shore and Bluefish were a big deal there. Lots of Bluefish recipes in the restaurants and charter boats to take out to catch Bluefish. I figured it was just another reason to feel sorry for people who live in New Jersey.

Bluefish from the No. Atlantic are very good. I was in the seafood business in Rhode Island in the 70's. We would buy Blues from the recreational fisherman for 10 cents a pound (legal at the time). The main run was in the fall and some guys could catch 300/400 lbs. A lot of the schools offshore would be 15/20 lb. fish. Anyway we would freeze them whole ( head-on, guts-in). You could then thaw them when needed, fillet and we would sell the filets for $.99/lb.
Look at all the mullet that's eaten in Florida and Alabama. But not eaten in Louisiana.

They used to run trucks full of them from GI to the North-East.

Wouldn't doubt it. Colder water, different prey source, could easily lead to different flavor.
The bluefish on the Atlantic and those in the Gulf are actually two distinct populations FWIW. They don't ever inter-breed due to geography and have markedly different life cycles. The ones in the NE routinely top 20# whereas ones in the Gulf rarely exceed 5#. So strange how the same species of fish can live so differently strictly based on geography.
To the OP: I've eaten gulf bluefish a couple of times. They're alright but I've always eaten them extremely fresh which helps.

I'm on cape cod vacationing with the family now. Had bluefish dip for dinner last night it was great. Have eaten it up here a bunch it's good up here. Down in the gulf I throw them back or use for bait.

Yes, damn good but you have to like fish. Of coarse don't over cook but this is one fish that is good baked in oven.

I've cooked it and eaten it fried and baked. Went fishing in the outerbanks on a charter and we caught a mess of them. Cleaned the blood lines and the meat was fine. Cooked them same day. I caught some small ones in gulf shores this summer and kept them. Cooked on the skillet just fine but was not near as good as the flounder I caught.

used to catch blues off the beach at Fort Morgan all the time. great fight on light tackle. Would fillet immediately, cut off red area, and fry up. Not bad at all.
i always throw them back in LA because we typically catch specks on the same trip. Once my old man had a brainfart moment and tired to lip one. perfect cut to thumb.
